I'm looking to start a fantasy army and was strongly considering Skaven. I really like the lore and the thought of big angry rats pouring through the streets is awesome (Gotrek and Felix: Skavenslayer!).
My main concern is from the looks of it a real lack of leadership. From the sounds of it our ratty armies can be at the mercy of anything with the fear special rule, like ogres or vampire counts. Is there anyway to combat this? Or are we stuck simply cringing when we fail that leadership save and our army panics into one another?
Of the local scene there looks to be at least one or two vampire counts and ogre players and I'd like to know if I'll be squirting the musk of fear when we get paired up. :/
at first glance our LD sucks. but remember for every rank bonus we get +1, so your Clanrats now have LD of 8 and your chieftain LD of 9.
slaves max out at 5, but who needs a slave. i've played VC and OK with my skaven and except for my 1 slave unit in one of my VC fights refusing to play ball. (failed every fear test for charging the unit of zombies, and passes every panic test i forced them to take (i kept jumping plague onto them i swear they rolled double 1's at least twice when i paniced them) fear didn't take a huge toal on me.

Thanks for the response!
Ah, yes! That does ease some of my worry for battling VC.
I wasn't all that fearful of fear before i started playing WHFB. Coming from 40k where LD isn't that big a factor, coming to WHFB where i largely lost my empire vs WE battle due to LD.
I know this isn't really helping, just sharing my fobia!
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.

poor leadership can work ether way a remember a battle I saw skaven vs orcs on the second turn a orc wyvern moved into terror range of the skaven army and terrorised 2/3 of the skaven army of the table
on turn 5 the skaven had lost all its characters all its shooting all its magic and almost all its units and the a unit of two clanrats managed to break a black orc unit the black orc unit fled and 80% of orc army panicked of the table turning the battle in to a solid skaven victory
but really i would not worry while it is the armies major weakness they have other tools to compensate and lessen the effect of there low leadership
