Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hello comrats, ==Me== here.
I've got a tourney coming up at the end of January and I'm trying to figure out which army to bring. I've only got Skaven in adequate points, but I could easily build up ==My== DE or Daemons in time.
How do you think Skaven would perform in a tourney setting. Low Ld presents a problem with all those Fear causing armies nowadays and we really don't have anything to compete with super units like Grave Guard, Death Star Shades, Black Guard, Bloodthirsters, or Plaguebearers.
I don't own any Jezzails or WLC at the moment (madness I know, but that's expensive stuff!), but I do have a ton of clanrats, 2 Ratling Guns, 1 WFT, plenty of Plague Monks, PCBs, Rat Ogres, slaves, Night/Gutter Runners, and Giant Rats. Would a Skaveny horde work in a tourney setting.
Also, should I go magic heavy (Grey Seer, 2 Engineers, Liber Bubonicus Priest) or stick with the tried and true Warlord+BSB with 2 Engineer caddies?
A magic heavy army could be fun and unusual, the shooty one is boring and has been done to death completely. A BSB could be useful though.

I think I want to run a more fighty/horde oriented list. All the magic defense people will bring in expectation of VCs and Daemons will hurt Skaven magic, especially stuff like the Ring of Hotek and Standard of Sundering.
Warlord w/ heavy armor, Weeping Blade, Cautious Shield, Warpstone Amulet (Fighty, cheap Ld10 for ranked units, and a good deal of protection)
Warlock Engineer w/ full kit (no pistol), Storm Daemon, Dispel Scroll
Warlock Engineer w/ full kit (no pistol), 2 Dispel Scrolls
BSB w/ Storm Banner
25 Clanrats, full command, WFT
2x 25 Clanrats, full command, RG
25 Clanrats, full command
4x 20 Slaves, musician
3 Giant Rat Packs
6 Night Runners
24 Plague Monks w/ 2hw, full command, Banner of Burning Hatred
2x 6 Gutter Runners w/ poisoned throwing stars
That's about 250 models, good magic protection from 4DD and 3 scrolls, some solid offensive magic with 3 Warp Lightnings, protection from the Storm Banner, Ld10 and re-rolling break tests, the lovely ITP Monks, super killy PCBs, plenty of throwaway units, some shooting for when I get into combat, and Gutter Runners for hunting war machines and skirmishers.
Do you think that would work?
seems pretty well thought out to me. i would take some jezzails & WLC cause i like to do something in the shooting phase, but that's just how i play.
I don't own any Jezzails or WLCs, otherwise I'd take tons of them Plus since I'm running the Storm Banner it would hamper their effectiveness for a few turns while the RGs and WFTs will get going in later turns, probably after the Banner has worn off.
I was considering a magic heavy list, swapping the charatters for a Grey Seer (Tenebrous Cloak, Eye, Charm), 2 Engineers (Daemon, Scroll and Globes, Amulet) and a Priest with a censer and Liber Bubonicus. The Gutter Runners would get dropped to cover the difference and any leftover points would go towards more Monks, Night Runners, and Giant Rats.
Land of the Chosen -> Warhammer- Skaven Army
Go look at the underempire.com website, lots of ideas for skaven conversions! There's a great one for a cheap warlock made out of a plague bearer lower body, a clanrate upper body, a space marine back pack, and a plague monk staff You can make 3 engineers for the cost of almost nothing! Especially if you buy the Battalion. My warlord.. he's the unit champion from the storm vermin with a sword conversion and ogre gut plate. My BSB- special edition one, but you can easily make one out of the stormvermin command blister.
That's a link to my skaven army pictures. If you look through it I believe you will find my converted ratling guns and warpfire throwers made out of rat ogres. If you play 40K, you will have the bitz to make them, its a super easy converion, and looks incredibly when next to a clan rat units.
Skaven horde can work, however its rough. You really need more magic if its a 2250 event, if its a 2K even you can survive with it, but will be rough. Your gutter runners need to tunnel and focus on assassinating characters. 3 units of 5 that tunnel is incredible! If there's some way you can get a bell, a really interesting LUCKY move i've gotten in the past is have the gutter runner who have just charged become frenzy or having hatred. Frenzy is great vs Vamps. Won't have to fear check, a lot of Vamp players only take ward saves, and you can double team with your unit. IE don't have a unit champion and charge knowing you'll lose, but just to try to cause 2 wounds on the 2 wound vampires. Its worth it.
If your going small, and you know your running into Vampire counts or Nurgle Demons bring a brass orb. Throwing that into a unit of Plague bearers is like gold! Read it carefully its wording is "no saves of any kind" IE no armor save, no ward saves, no regeneration.. nothing. Plague bearere are really poor with intiative it will drop a ranked unit down to nothing, and probably even kill a character. Also, no look out sir due to the wording of "anything under the template" Vs dwarves its hysterical and will triple its points.
On your lord consider the enchanted shield instead of the cautious shield. I get why your using it. However, remember using it as 2 hands means no parry HW/SH bonus IE 4+ save, then 4+ ward. Pretty good still as your probably thinking challenge and negate 2 attacks, save 1, maybe take 1 wound at most vs other lords. I'm still a fan of throwing the unit champion and attacking the unit or a multi wound model with my lord, however, i play pretty aggressively with skaven and look to overwhelm and opponent and force them to make bad decisions.
1. Assassinate opponents wizards early. Sacrifice the gutter runners to kill wizards. rolling 4 dice with poisen you should get 1 poisen, then hopefully cause another wound to kill them.
2. Brass orb. works like gold vs nurgle, as long as it hits, but useless vs anything elven or high Initiative
3. Plague censer bearers vs characters or cavalry, frenzy+high str= good for us! I like units of 5 to be used just like the gutter runners, kill those characters!
4. I'm not wild about giant rats, if your looking for throw aways for the same price you get 3 more units of 5 night runners.
