Hey, I am currently a Dark Elf player and I plan on also becoming a Skaven one this summer when the new book comes out. My question is, what models are safe to buy and are unlikely to get redone with the new book? I want to start painting them as soon as possible so I don't get "swarmed" by them all at once. Any suggestions on what models are safe to buy? Particularly "clan rats"?
Well, I think most of them will be redone since they are about ten years old, but the plauge monks are a pretty safe bet I guess.
They are relatively new, look good and bases properly.
The clanrats are very likely to be redone, after all they form the backbone of all skaven armies (almost).
I like the miniatures now because they look "hordey" but they have a big problem, they are a pain to base (those @%!! tails).
The censer bearers will probably stay too.
Plague monks definately, since they got redone recently along with the rat ogre/giant rat plastic kit.
Those are the only "newish" unit releases I can think of...but I can't think of too many units that'll become "useless" with the new army book.

Plague monks, rate ogres, and giant rats were all redone for lustria and are pretty safe really. This is why i am a big advocate of making your clan rats out of plague monks, the models are better, you don't have to deal with slaves, and if they change the book to allow plague monks as core your pretty safe on models which can be interchangable.
Most of the metal models will probably change: engineers, assassins, warlord, warp lightning cannon will probably be redone.
Clan rats are iffy as they are representative of so much in our line. Weapon teams will change, but probably so will the rules.
40K-Beakies(9-14-4),Guard(4-7-2),Orks(34-12-11). FANTASY-Dwarves(15-6-7),Beasts (14-14-1), Skaven (17-17-10) DoC (6-1-2). CYGNAR (28-15-1)
Are you asking rules wise or models wise? I mean if you just do not want old models then what people have mentioned is probably right. However, if you are looking game wise, clanrats and plague monks IMO are the least likely to change how they play. I can not see an army not using these and still be effective. Skaven will always need the numbers.

I was wondering this same question myself. I wanted to start building a Skaven army as well, and I too was trying to think of any models in the army that would get updates. As mentioned, the plague monk models are fairly new, so I would assume they won't be getting any updated models. I had read on Warseer I think, that someone had seen a new sprue for clan rats. If that's the case, I can just wait until the official release to buy some. If they get new sprues great, if not then I'll just buy the clan rats when the new book comes out.
Other "newish" models that won't receive new box sets might be the lightning cannon, Thanquol and Boneripper and maybe stormvermin?
It's been quite some time since I looked at buying Skaven models, and I can't remember what got updates between 5th and 6th edition, as well as what got revamped during Lustria. Anyone else able to think of any models that might or might not get new molds made for them?
I know of the existence of concept art for new Clanrats, though not of new plastics but I don't think it would be a stretch to assume there will be a new boxed set.
Also; Plastic Doomwheel!
And though I've seen no evidence of it, something I'd really want is plastic Stormvermin.
But to the question; I can imagine that Night Runners, Gutter Runners, Plague Monks, Rat Ogres, Plague Census Bearers, Jezzails, Weapons Teams, Globadiars, Warp Lightning Cannons and the Screaming Bell won't get new models.

I don't think that clanrats and stormvermin are really compatible enough for one box set. Looking back on other recent releases, Ork burnas and lootas only had weapons to include, while Empire state troops and Greatswords stayed pretty much to themselves. I love the Thanquol model and I really want to get it just to be able to say I have one.
Hopefully we get new clanrats models with the new book, or, failing that, I would plead to see plague monks as a core choice; even if I have to not include any other clan-specific units and need to wear pants on my head the entire game.
Asking for suggestions without knowing what you're planning on doing is like asking a blind man what color shirt matches your eyes.
I'm actually holding off buying Clanrats despite the fact that I really need them, because I HATE the models and want the new ones.
