I am thinking about getting into fantasy after playing 40k (necrons). Here's the question, i played necrons and i am looking for a CC army for fantasy are skaven the best? They certinly look cool, and my opponent is building a vampire count army. So second question, how does the Skaven hold up to the counts? and if they dont what is the best army for defeating them. last question, if i was to build a 1000pt army what would you suggest for search and destroy.
PS sry about being a noob just trying to beat my opponant really bad as his nid army kills my necron cant let him win in fantasy!
If you just want a mega-killy CC army, then it would be better looking at Chaos or Ogres... Skaven aren't really a kind of trample-everything-in-front-of-you kind of army, it can be hard with big armies of skaven to get the CC to work properly, plus there's always the temptation to try and mix magic and combat.
Skaven specifically have certain trouble holding up to vampire counts particularly with a low average leadership value which would be repeatedly tested making fear tests to get off charges against any units in your opponent's army.
A really great CC army to help to deal with Vampire counts would be lizardmen, as they can outfight most units in a vampire counts army, unlike skaven. The problem of fear can be worked around by whittling down your enemy's units with Skinks, so they can no longer auto-break you (if they don't outnumber you), by using kroxigors which cause fear themselves you can partially negate the fear. There are lots of nice blessed spawnings - upgrades that bestow special rules and/or conbat bonuses - which can be taken to enhance the lizards combat ability, giving extra attacks on the charge (even to the point where a unit of saurus with a frontage of 5 can get 16 attacks on the charge, at strength 4) and a specific other which makes the unit immune to psychology - Great for the vampire counts.
Don't want to drag on much more I see this getting very boring, but I hope I have been helpful, and good luck!
Sure skaven will have a hard time battling VC without running away, but that is what numbers are for! An average clan rat unit have Ld8 with the rank bonuses and if you field a warlord all your ranked units will be Ld10, if they're within range of the warlord general!
Another way to make fear a not-so-mean factor, is shooting the enemy to bits with skryre weaponry and magic. Of course the VC player will be raising more units, but the more you kill from ranged attacks, the more he needs to raise => the bigger a chance of miscasting! try exploiting this, also - always, always outnumber your enemy, even if it's VC. then you wont autobreak in CC and will get charges off easier!
Im going to be facing VC myself soon with my skaven, and i will put a lot of effort into assassinating his general with gutter runners, since poison weapons are nasty
As a summary: To skaven or not to skaven? TO SKAVEN!
If what you're looking for is something to directly combat VC, as a VC player myself I REALLY dont like going up against Dwarfs in low cost games.
Cheap Warmachines and dispel dice aplenty make them able to frustrate in the magic phase and heavy armour usually leads to them holding up well in CC.
In terms of Skaven, you will certainly have fun, but you will need to be VERY careful of units such as Dire Wolves flanking you and ridding that all important rank bonus.
But I would Skaven. They are a great FB army which, especially if you make a shooty skaven force, will have a very decent chance against VC.
Good luck, and may the mighty Horned One watch over you.
As someone who hates nids (I don't have trouble anymore, but I still don't like them) I think maybe it's time for some revenge. And by that I mean Dwarves. I love to fight VC with my Dwarves.
If you take a balanced list you have these advantages:
superior CC ability, even against their scarey generals.
Awesome magic defense, against a canny and prepared Dwarf general, they will be pretty much shut down, "Nae, ye cannot have any O yer fancy reinforcements".
Superior shooting (yes, even if you only take two war machines and two units of ten quarellers/thunderers).
High leadership, this is great against a fear causing army, and with rune banners you can give a unit double unit strength (hello outnumbering) or make them immune to fear and terror.
If you want a cool army that can pound Vampire Counts into the ground, none will do you better than Dwarves!
But I'll admit Skaven are pretty mint too.
Skaven to me is probably one of the funniest and most fun army to play or play against. Win or lose its great entertainment. Sometimes your guns blow up and you do more harm to yourself than the opponent does and other times your fp is unrivaled gunning down scores of enemy (and friendly) units. That and coming from 40k Imperial guard i have always wanted to shoot into CC and with this army you can.
