Wondering what other Skaven players use a counter to elite infantry, like Chaos Warriors, High Elf Swordmasters, etc.
Note I don't really count Magic as a great option. Magic Defense is still high in good armies and the dice are variable, so relying on them is a mistake. I'm looking for something more reliable like shooting or combat.
Best I've come up with so far is Slaves as a tar pit plus some kind of damage dealer. Plagueclaw isn't bad for larger units, biggest I'm seeing is 20-25. Doomwheel is also good but a bit more situational, some elites can wound it easily. Haven't experimented with a HBA yet but with new love of war machines, I'm a bit hesitant too.
What's been working for your rats?
Use Rat ogres, Jezzils, Globadiers, plagueclaw, and poised wind mortars work well.
I overlooked rat ogres as they have high points cost. But str 5 can be devastating but to win the fight you really need to use hammer and anvil tactic, maybe giant rats, slaves, clan rats just as long as you get 3 ranks.
Both Jezzails and globadiers are nasty, str 6 and -4 to your save, or wound of 4+ and no saves. Use against any high armour save or high tougness unit.
With new and better rules for catapults I'll recommend plague claw catapults and poised wind mortars. Although plague claws only have str 2 they exchange this for using a large blast template. I love poised wind mortars i previously used to make a tactical retreat using these(i versed TK so they were very slow) to maximise my shooting then charge them and break their bones. Anyway, take cover from enemy fire by placing them behind the parent unit, as they are very fragile.
Good luck with all your battles and win some for the Great Horned Rat!
I consider Jezzails one of the worst units in the book, they're horribly over-priced and under-armored for what they do. Globadiers are a bit weaker because of the Skirmish nerf but always shoot into CC is nice.
I've already got 2 Plagueclaws in my list, they seem very effective, especially against Elves. I can see Wither being a nice combination but don't think it's worth dumping 4 spells into Plague on a Grey Seer even for the chance.
cannons with good rolls are pretty good too since they use the template
I was thinking of using two but I switched to two Doomwheels, I think I'll try both. The Doomwheel is good in CC for a higher cost and worse at shooting blocks.
censors can wreak havoc, with 2 or 3 attacks with hatred and plus the fog attacks makes for a unit most others will want to stay away from. and they are hard for your opponent to shoot cause of the skirmishers rule, they are only 16 pts, but considered against other armies "elites" they are fairly cheap for what they can do...
One idea I've thought of is to buy a small handful of cheap chieftans and put them in the front rank of a unit. At 3 attacks each with stats that are just as good, if not better, than the elite infantry of other armies, you can have your very own nasty combat unit.
The downside of this is that it is quite expensive, and it is a lot of points if you lose.
I am heading off to the Peace Corps. It is bery likely I will not be back. Good luck to all of you endeavors.
HPA is very good, I front charged a unit of 24 Saurus Spearmen in a 6x4 formation, I killed 18 and he did 1 wound (also ment he didnt have any ranks), it can easily walk over units now as long as you dont roll a 1/2 for your attacks.
In my 8th Ed army I also run 6 rat ogres and a unit of 30 stormvermin with the AP banner with a bell in it as my hard hitters.
I also believe that HPA are great at killing elite infantry. With the ability to regenerate, do impact hits and have thunderstomp you can take down most units. When i play him though I have to use the hammer and anvil so he dosen't die to spears and/or horde tactics.
