So having a 1000pt game comin up im vs the chaos warriors i have one question.. How do i win? my troops are not hard enough to win combat so am iv been thinking would using a warp lightning canon, doomwheel, jezzails, and maybe a furnace be a good option? maybe take some of those weapon teams we used to love so much? andy help would be greatly appreciated
I don't play skaven ( yet ) , but winning combat from them is a no-go, for almost every army in the game. You could tie them up with big units of slaves though, of 30+ and despite ridiculous casualties, stay put thanks to steadfast. Meanwhile shoot the bejeezus out of them with warpstone. Lot's of jezzails come to mind.
Quantity has a quality all of its own.
In 1000pts you don't get a lot of Chaos Warriors or Knights. In fact, I'd go as far to say they're a bad choice at that points value (Marauders. Lots of marauders is what they really want). Shear volume of attacks can win you the game - even without the usual Skaven toys you can beat them in a war of attrition, especially if you opt for a horde formation or some Plague Monks (or any gas/poison weapons that ignore saves). And then you'll have more units than he does, making his flanks vulnerable.
Get a BSB, remain Steadfast, then overwhelm. Anything else is just a bonus.
(Bring a few templates if Marauders are likely to be fielded...)
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone
I think a pack of 6 rat ogres ( possibly with Skweel Gnawtooth ) with 3 or 4 packmasters is pretty darn scary too. It'll cost around 270 pts though. 18 str5 attacks, and 3 str5 stomp attacks! If you have Skweel in there, his attacks allow no armoursaves.
6 ratogres should be able to tear up a unit of chaos warriors or marauders, although 1 on 1 they can still lose, or lose a lot of wounds. Throw them in the flank of a unit tied up by some slaves.
Kill their BSB.
Watch out for Knights. They kill anything and everything.

Skaven never fight fair, always treat a combat like a loss unless you can get something good into it, like a HPA, ROgres, maybe Monks. A block of 50 Slaves will cost less than 10 Warriors with no equipment or command, and they have hold them forever with a BSB and General nearby.
Than just keep casting into them. Warp-Lightning and Scorch are killers as are most of the Plague Spells. Slaves give you the advantage of time, which is huge.
I have to say, Marauders aren't much better against Skaven. They do less damage, Slaves can easily kill a few each round and spells/shooting do much more damage. Also, in my opinion, never run Jezzails ever. They're over-priced, inaccurate and do a job, badly, that Skaven can achieve more efficiently with different units. I can't understand why people like them.
He (The Bearded One) has a point, a unit of 10 took out my entire unit of Knights, and a decent chunk of one of my warrior units. I do hates me some Jezzails.
Anyway, as a WoC player I'd agree that at 1000 points we can't bring much. You will outnumber us quite significantly, and all you have to do is make sure you make those numbers count. You should be able to surround them and destroy. Anything that either puts large minuses to our armour, or better yet, ignores it entirely, is a great idea, so poisoned wind mortars will do well. You can afford losses, we can't.
A unit of 10 is 200 points of can't move, bad save T3 BS3 bodies. Plague Magic, both warmachines, Furnaces, Globadiers, Mortars, Fire Throwers, etc. are all better at killing Knights. Also, Heavy Cav is very unpopular now since terrain is so harsh, charging is worthless, Stedfast, on and on.
Sorry I'm just so perplexed that people run such a sub-par unit. If you like the models or have a theme, that's all good but for winning? Never.
i have been thinking is it worth running a plague furnace with 30 plague monks? or too much in 1000pts? im guessing a warlock engineer might be better due to the warp lighning rat ogres globadiers too. any idea if weapon teams may be more effective against them due to their lack of shooting? i'd say im decent enough to use skaven as iv been playing with them a while... but this is only the 2nd time iv came up against chaos. im thinking a doomwheel might be a decent option too
so far i have been thinking doomwheel and WLC and globadiers in my list
