I've been rummaging in my list a bit and rewritten it, and I want to use a stormvermin horde. I mostly had a thing for clanrats, but if you have 60 clanrats and 70 slaves in your list painting will become kinda repetitive..
And stormvermin are still pretty cool, so how do you guys feel about this:
36 stormvermin ( and a warlord on warlitter to fill the remaining 4 spots )
warpfirethrower ( for the lolz )
Razorstandard ( for the pain )
I think they can be pretty wicked with the razorstandard as they'd be str4 armourpiercing, reducing most saves to 6+ or just the parry, and even intimidating knights ( and, strangely enough, the steamtank? 3+ saves are easier to fail then 1+ and 2+ ).
Wadaya think? For the reasonable price of 392 pts, I think the banner is what makes them hit.
You could also field queek headtakker, the unit will cost more points, but then you have a ws5, s5 unit with armourpiercing, so thats -3 on the enemies armour save. This will cost you 144 points (for you unit size)
I would say that 30 is a good size for Stormvermin, otherwise it gets a bit expensive for Skaven. Remember that alongside your Stormvermin you should have multiple hordes of Clanrats and/or Skavenslaves. With that combination, you will have a force to fear.
And yes, do not forget to include Warlord Queek Headtaker, as an extra strength and weapon skill bonus is excellent to have, which would fare even better against those knights and steam tanks.
i would also make them 30 or 31 strong, so with the war litter thats 35 spaces, 6 wide x 5 deep, i just used this against a vampire list and pwnd his whole list even after they took heavy casualties from his spells, stupid winds of death and curse of years!!! the deeper ranks will help you push against another horde unit, reducing the attacks coming in and with the deeper ranks you have a better chance at keeping the steadfast rule and taking theirs away. i do like the AP banner idea, i have been giving mine the flamming banner in case i run into ethereal units or something with regen, but so far havent found my stormvermin in a position where the flamming banner was of use, but the AP banner will almost always get put to good use.
Actually I wanted to try and use them as a choppy block ( of ...doom? ). My army is an as non-cheesy as possible list with 30 clanrats, 30 clanrats, 35 slaves, 35 slaves, 5 rat ogres and warlord on rat ogre, and these 36 stormvermin with warlitter and razorbanner ( and the clanrats and stormvermin have 2 warpfirethrowers and 1 poisoned wind mortar ), 5 poisoned wind globadiers and a BSB and magic defence warlock. I also tried to stay away from special characters like queek.
Stormvermin are really cheap, you guys have been blinded by 2 pt slaves A horde of them is pretty good for their cost and this would throw out about 30 str4 armourpiercing attacks at initiative 5.
best way to test it...get a unit of 36 stormvermin+armor piercing and an equal point value of slaves with spears unit and mash them up
So, a stormvermin "horde" in your current force then?
I'd go with :
1. Queek Headtaker over a Warlord on a Bonebreaker Rat Orge. He's actually cheaper and quite more deadly. Plus he will upgrade your pack IF YOU CHOOSE to do so.
2. I would actually make the pack only 30 models strong.
3. I always have my pack take the Storm Banner if the game points allow me to. Its too dang useful to leave behind at the lair ;D
4. For kicks ( if you have the points to spare ) a fangleader with tail weapon/ poisoned weapons or an assassin.
5. Love the WFTT with them
Hopefully I helped :}
