Welcome to Librarium Online!
Ok, So a short while ago, I made up my mind to play Skaven. The only thing I have for 8th edition...is the rulebook. I picked up the Skaven army book, and I wanted some advice on the best way to collect models to put an army together.
I could use some help in what should I purchase?
And, maybe a list (2000-2500) to aim for.....
I am thinking of picking up 1x-2x Island of Blood Skavens, and a Skaven Battalion box.
I know I want to play with an ABomb, and thats about it LOL.....
I don't have a list to put up. I think I would field Plague Monks, Clanrats, and slave tar pits. I don't think I would be using Stormvermin for my first lists.
So please a little help would be greatly appreciated.
When you pick up 2X IOB and a battalion, I think you should get a box of plague monks, so you can make a unit of at least 30. I would go and convert on of the warlords/warchiefs from the IOB to a BSB and mabey get a grey seer to add some magic.
Well, the IOB gives you great hordes of clanrats/slaves
If you picked up 2x battalions that's also 40 slaves/clanrats to equip as you wish (the HW can replace the IOB spears, I got slings as i just dislike spears - no parry and increased points - that doesn't work if you charge? I'll pay less and spend the points making a horde)
6x rat ogres (you can get a master bred rat ogre with one of the metals to make it 7 - very good unit. The spare IOB can be used for a bonebreaker conversion,)
40x plague monks (20 doesn't work)
and character bits for converting from IOB and weapon teams
add whatever spice r.e. cannon/doomwheel and robert's your mothers brother.
Double IOB would do fine to begin with if you wanted
2 battalions worked for me. I had to add in one extra unit of clanrats to make up some numbers, but that got me most of the way to a full army. All I had to add were the toys .
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone
Well, that really depends on how you want your army and what your budget is - The best advice is to plan well your purchases.
I would endorse at least one IOB - you'll need the rules and the amount of clanrats is impressive (and the other stuff) - unless you don't like shields.
Battalions are also good, but if you don't like plague monks, and rat ogres / giant rats just buy clanrat boxes. It all depends but it's good value in my eyes (I swapped my elves for more skaven - horde for the win!
I do like plague monks....
I think I will get at least one box of IoB Skaven.....
The one negative of IoB skaven is they're not easy to customize (from a pure newbie perspective here)...
Didn't help that I didn't know s*** about f*** when I picked it up either...I didn't replace any of the weapon arms, and to ditch shields (if you wanted to) requires hacking the hell out of the models...they're all just simple 2-piece models. (Well, the rats are anyway). Not sure how "tournament legal" my stupid spear-armed rats would be if I dispursed them in hand-weapon units (since spears suck) or if I'm now stuck with models that I won't ever field. I guess I could always remove the arms and re-do them too if I had to.
Shields and hand weapons are really good, In my opinion. For a 25% points increase, you get a increase in save by one (16.67% improved chance of living) and a 6+ ward (same) - 33.33% improved lifespan. Combat is won from resolution - that one casualty is the equivalent of a whole rank.
With my IOB i used all hand weapons - only half have HW, the rest have spears, but i kept my battalion slaves (and a extra box's worth) and got slings - there's your hand weapons,
Besides slings on slaves make them entertaining stand and shoot models vs cavalry if you're lucky. They can't hit a barn door, but throwing a bucket of dice gets your opponent's attention quite handily (for example, field 45+ with musician - 10 wide) - that's umm... 40 stand and shoot shots. Oh, that'll get attention (and maybe poor threat management from opponent - It looks impressive for a mighty 114.5 points. Heck, you may even hurt someone with their attacks in combat too
Hey, I recently started skaven as well and started with the IOB box (have a buddy who wanted the high elves..so great!). Anyway, I started with that and slowly added to my collection. One thing I did, hopefully people think that this is ok, is find OOP clanrats and pick them up for cheap. All of them I found were already painted and just with the simple fact that you need so many of them to field a competitive army it was a great deal, IMO. Ebay is good tool. WHat are other peoples opinion on using OOP versions of the core units? Again, I like it because it's an inexpensive, time saver....not sure how its looked on in tournement play, though.
