Welcome to Librarium Online!
So I just started skaven and got an IOB box and the skaven armybook. (Only the skaven part and no mini rulebook)
I'm thinking how to continue, atleast getting an extra batallion and thinking about getting a claw catapult/Warp lightning cannon, but not sure which one to get.
And any advise on how many models I need for a 1000pt List? I'd rather not use slaves. Is that going to be a problem?(If I have to use slaves I might make goblin slave units...
Thanks in advance.
Well the claw and warp lightning are part of the same kit no? but personal bias says go for the WLC every time , heck in 1000 points you could even get 2.
alas another person not a slave fan! get as many bodies as you can, even without slaves there are many ways to get a healthy 80+ bodies on the table at 1000 points. Personaly I find a few small units of slaves usefull as a screen (20 is fine in my world) rather than epic units of 50+ (that and there is just no way i can finance such units ) Working on the IOB, i'd look into two units of 29 clanrats (put a character in each, a chieftain and a Warlock), Your two rat ogres and of course your WLC's, and perhapse a weapon team somewhere to add a bit of zest. Gives you a smallish army to start off with and build out on... but as its skaven always think: MORE BODIES whenever possible
hope this helps, sorry if its a bit vague
I started my army with two IOB, battelion, 2 boxes of stormvermin(the look kinda cool), a box of plaguemonks and some special characters. This gives you a pretty big army, for not that much money.
I have purchased the IOB and a battalion which actually set me up with a,lot of models. I am a huge slave fan and think they are the best(if not one the best) units in all of warhammer. For 2 pts your getting a very horrible WS 2 but a average Strength and toughness and have relatively good options, i usually run them with spears=D.
FIRST AND FOREMOST i would buy a codex and have some form of plan, look at forums on LO to see what everyone else is doing, make a few posts to get peoples opinions and play lots of games using proxy models. A army without a codex is like a building a IKEA bed without a instruction manual!
By Codex Punching gnoblars means Army Book (40k name for them)
I would recommend the main rulebook before that, which you appear to need
The amount of models you need depends on your army... which isn't very helpful, I know.
The IOB is a great way to start (go HW and shields! please! I thoroughly endorse them over spears)
I'd play some smaller games first and build up with what you're comfy with - you can't go wrong with large blocks of slaves / clanrats
THX "stayscrunchyinmilk" LOL's nice name
@ "stayscrunchyinmilk" why do you prefer shields? I can agree with you however the chances of getting a 6+ armour save and 6+ ward save is very good especially when we take loads of casualities, but wouldn't more attacks be better?
I have another question, i am thinking of swapping every now and then between hand weapon and shield and spear, what would you do? magnitised? blue tac? lightly gluing them on?
Back on topic...
If you can find magnits that are small enough I would go for that, otherwise I would try blue tac.
Shields are the same cost as spears. spears give you a extra rank in attacks in the turn after you charge, vs shields.
I am a very firm believer in using attrition to grind down your opponents, and the survivability lends to that, and keeping your ranks intact is also a very valuable ploy (for your combat res AND Leadership)
Instead of spears, i'd rather have my unit 7 wide vs 5 wide - you get the extra attacks from the go, and can soak more damage. the points spent making your 30 strong unit wield spears can be better used (In my opinion) to just get more.
even if the str would stop your armor save you get a ward save - this is vital, for example:
A unit one rank deep of ogres is in combat with you, you are going to win the combat by combat res (3 ranks, banner, and any wounds you do) they are going to win by wounds (and maybe a banner / charge bonus) you reduce 1/6th of casualties taken with your ward save.
and you may be tempted to think it's ok to be charged.
oop, work calls
cheers "furrie" and "stayscrunchyinmilk", much appreciated.
So, would people also recommend rat ogres? (As the IOB ad battalion come with rat ogres thought it might be worthwhile to talk about)
I personally don't like them, if you get them run them in small squads so they help with causing damage is good, or run them in a massive squad to tear apart any unit. The main issue is that they are 40pts a model thats a squad of 20 slaves!
Would 30 slaves armed with shields and musician and 2 rat ogres with pack master be able to take on another unit?? Numbers and damage???
I don't really like small units of Rat Ogres - they break too easily and are too flimsy (to shooting / magic) and cause fear tests
What I do use mine for is in a unit of 7 - 6 rat ogres and a couple of packmasters, with a warlord on bone breaker
Now at three wide, two deep you still cancel ranks, the 2nd rank can add 3 attacks, and the front rank can do some serious damage to boot. then you thunder stomp.
You have a ablative ogre (to wounds from shooting / combat etc) and it's fierce, and has a better than standard ld. Oh, and challenges are entertaining (master bred or the bone breaker?)
I don't rate them highly, but i do have the models so may as well use them
