I have been noticing a pattern in my games. I find in larger games like 2500+ I seem to crush the opponent, yet in 1500 point games I struggle to win. This is not to say I don't win in those games, it's just that I win 50% less of the time. I recorded some data (yeah, I got really bored) and I found that I won 9/10 bigger games I played but I only won 4/10 smaller games.
Is this just my playing style? Or do you all experience that?
Just curious to know.
IMHO, WHFB as a game seems to be geared for games of about 2500 pts in size. Below 2000 pts, and the game seems to resemble rock-paper-scissors a bit.
A little beside the point, perhaps? Or, if my assumption is halfway correct, it may mean that you have a superior all-comer's list at "the right" points sizes and are suffering from rock-paper-scissors at "the wrong" points sizes.
It might also mean you've done a better job mastering list-building at larger points sizes but haven't figured out how to properly focus smaller points games. Especially in small points games, you have to build a list ruthlessly focused on specific tactical approaches, tossing out any units that don't fit. HPAs are terrific, yes, but they aren't actually appropriate for every army list, and this is going to be most noticeable at small points sizes.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

Hmm… I see your reasoning.
So now since I am a better larger games all-comers list builder, I need to focus on the smaller side of things. I will need to experiment and see what works and what doesn't, and if most things work, which ones work best.
I also believe that smaller games of Warhammer are similar to rock, paper, scissors. I need to find out whether certain upgrades are necessary, which units are superfluous and which ones are necessary, and generally what play style works for me at those kinds of points values.
Thanks for the help!
All our big fun toys are in the rare section, at 1500pts you only get 375 on shooty hitty stuff unlike EVERYONE else who gets a decent warmachine in the special section, Empire, Dwaves, Orcs etc. At 2500+ we really come in our own, lots of troops and lots of warmachines. I've found bigger games easier because of this.
