Welcome to Librarium Online!
I am on the cusp of buying alot of clanrats but would like a little help from Skaven Veterans on the best builds / unit sizes / ways to field them.
First thing is equipment. FC is a given with maybe the exception of a unit champion if points are scarce and you need to fit that doomrocket in your list, but what about weapon wise unit to unit? The options im looking at are Sheild and Sword (SwS) or Spear and Shield (SpS). I know you have SS as tar pits and SpS for a more offensive defence (lots of attacks while not necessarily instigating combat), but which of the 2 option should be concentrated on and in what numbers for say a 2000-2250pt game? I was thinking of one unit of each, but am i best going all SS, and hope my wacky war machines and magic can do the hard work for me, or should i invest in at least one unit of SpS to act as a phalanx.
Im thinking 3 units, 2 x SS and 1 x SpS, each 40-50 strong, but what is the best number to field each unit at?
And then, what is the best way to field them, in width and number of ranks wise? I was thinking 6 wide for at least one of th SS units with a BSB in.
Is it wise to use skaven in any horde formation as our LD is effected by ranks? If so what numbers in the unit and wht equipment type works best in your opinion?
My overall list theme is going to be Skyre, im just not fan of the beast in Moulder or Plague stuff in Pestilens, though a unit of Night Runner/Gutter Runners (the Special choice, i forget which). Will make an apperance. So This may influence what the best options for my Clanrats are.
Thanks for your valued input.
best fun i have with clan rats is to run one block of 100 SwS, they are actually slaves somedays and a bell unit other times, they work wonders, having a 100 means they can soak up punishment and overwhelm anything through combat res or by killing it, put a high ledership rat in there and they stay leadership 10, becasue of there strength in numbers rule, for a while.
the other block i have is 40 Sps rats, they are used to bring another weapon team in and to stuff another charector in, they get used to support the larger unit or tie up something nasty for a turn or two.
both units have the standard and musican and are run in horde formation simply becasue i find it more effective, especially when you have 100 rats pushing the bell, the few times i used this it just got shot with everything my opponent could and still managed to get into combat and thanks to the bell itself (number 13) the entire unit got to hit which turned out to be over 160 attacks!
another thing i would say is try the hell pit out, it really is great.
You'll want at least 40, 10 wide and 4 deep. Another thing that's good to do with them is place a hero with battle standard and then take the D3 combat res magical standard. Ive seen this really help out at the end.
If you don't want to have a horde - which in some cases, is much better for manoeuvrability - then I use my 225 point formula, and it hasn't let me down.
30 x Clanrats
This unit is paired up with:
30 x Clanrats
You really can’t have one without the other, and this is a case where you could have one massive horde of Clanrats and these guys could outflank. Really pisses the enemy off
