After 16 yrs of loyally playing WoC, I've decided to try something 'new'. Since there aren't alot of skaven players where I game, (just me, apparantly), and since everybody who bought IoB seems to want to be Elvish, I decided I'd be opportunistic and collect a bunch of skaven on the cheap.
Some of the rules have me a bit addled, tho... I have downloaded the FAQs and read and re-read the book, but some things remain unclear. i.e. the doomwheel. In the rules it states that it fires 3 shots per turn. Ok, got it. Roll once for the strength of all three, right? I'm unclear about the wording as to misfires, tho. It says that no MORE shots are fired this turn implying that a roll is made for each shot fired. So what am I missing?
This is just 1 of several weird apparant conflicts that I've encountered that aren't covered by the FAQs.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
You roll for Str each time you fire. It's just part of Skaven randomness. Sometimes you blow up on the 1st shot othertimes your oppoent is removing their prized dragon, greater demon, stegadon. etc from those 3 Str 10 hits that each did 6 wounds.
The book was frankly poorly written, the army is fun as heck to play but the rules can be a bit much to wrap your head around. The FAQ helped with 80% of it, but there are still some issues. We live with them.
With the Doomwheel, you roll separately for each shot, resolve the hits and/or misfire, then continue onto shot #2, then shot #3, on down the line. It has to be done this way, otherwise how could (as the rulebook states) the Doomwheel target multiple units in a turn where it killed the first unit?
Fear me, mortals, for I am The Anointed, The Favored Son of Chaos, The Scourge of the World. The armies of the Gods rally behind me, and it is by My Will and by My Sword that your weakling nations shall fall. - Archaon, The Everchosen, Lord of the End Times
1. Roll Strength of Zzzap attack
2. Measure to see which unit is closest
3. Roll to wound with the first bolt
4. If successful the model hit gets any saves that may be applicable
5. If the save is failed, roll a D6 and that is how many wounds it suffers
6. Repeat the steps from 2 to 6 two more times
Yes, against a unit of 50 models this isn't that useful. But the reason for the 'entire unit wiped out' rules is for if you kill the target in one or two hits. The 'unit' in question may in fact be only one multiple wound model. But it is still a unit for the purposes of the game.
For example, rolling up to a Giant and a Goblin unit. The Giant is closest, so takes the first bolt hit. This hit manages to multiply into 6 wounds, felling the Giant in the first shot. The remaining two shots then hit the next nearest unit, the Goblins.
On page 67, in the third paragraph under Zzzzap, it states that you roll once and "this is the strength of all the bolts this turn." You just use the same strength for any other units that get hit that turn.
