Been looking at a few different builds for an Engineer. Have seen some interesting killy set-ups (even though most are just lvl 1 or lvl 2 casters) but am curious how the experienced Skaven runners make theirs.
Warriors of Chaos > 3,000
Life - TBA
I usually run my grey seer with a scroll (+skalm + 4+ ward), so my warlocks are generally freed up with their points and don't have to caddy.
I'm partial to the level 1 with a condenser + doom rocket. He's a lot of bang for the buck at only a little over 100 points. I never leave home without him.
Beyond that, I've found that a level 1 with warpstone token x 3 is actually pretty nasty. It's nice to rattle off all your casting dice, have your opponent waste all his dispel, and then say, oh yeah, by the way here's another lightning. He depends more on your current mood.
A warlock with a brass orb can be a surprise. Only 65 points, and you just suicide his group of slaves towards a monster, toss it, and have a decent shot at gibbing a 250 point monster outright. Worth a shot, especially considering the army fluff.
I tried some of the battle builds and they were pretty meh. You can give them a "free" WAW, but that only raises their stats to mediocre. Warlock armor and an enchanted item/talisman are going to be 50 more points, which will put him in the triple digits, and he won't be scaring anyone.
Same with the rifle build, giving him a rifle and optics keeps him to 50 points, but he'll never make that back, especially with move or fire.
Level 2s are generally a waste, on high winds magic turns you're generally just tossing 6 dice at 13th and praying. The rest of the ruin list is pretty bleh anyway, except Crack's Call and Scorch, but CC is situational and your warlock can't choose the second spell. Better to just toss a decent number of dice at one of the best magic missiles in the game. 5+ for a 1D6+2 Str5 hits, no armor? Yes please.
Fear me, mortals, for I am The Anointed, The Favored Son of Chaos, The Scourge of the World. The armies of the Gods rally behind me, and it is by My Will and by My Sword that your weakling nations shall fall. - Archaon, The Everchosen, Lord of the End Times
My favorite build is just a warlock holding a doom rocket. I usually make sure my Grey Seer has skitterleap and i skitterleap my warlock turn one and place him 14 inches away from the center of a unit i want to hit. Throw four dice and watch it go 12-16 inches and wipe out half a unit.
I actually just played a game yesterday where i got a direct hit on a unit of orc boys then dreaded 13th'd a unit of savage orc biguns. made my day quite easy
Just a Doomrocket for me too, cheap and cheerful, and the 14" away Skitterleap is a great tactic, my record I think is 29 models dead, sadly they were on goblins!
had a game this weekend, used my engineer with doomrocket on a group of pinkhorrors. he had 44 of em and i killed 25 at 29 inches of distance.
- no that was not luck it was calculated
also level 1 with condensor is quite fun
