Welcome to Librarium Online!
Anyone in Manchester/Greater Manchester?
I'm in Bolton, new player with a <800pt army at the moment.
I'm 20 mins from Bolton & Manchester, just started Warhammer Fantasy.
Don't bash me for slight forum archaeology.
I live in Manchester. Also a member of Manchester Area Wargames society, which you can check out here: Manchester Area Wargames Society
Let me know if you're interested in coming down
Hi Egorredcloak, do you play FB or 40k?
Im new to 40k, and ive just a small Tyranid army im painting up (i dont wont to play with an unpaintd army)
When i finish, i was planning on going to the Games Workshop in Arndale to play - They have a casual 40k gaming night on Tuesdays apparently (i have never been, so dont know what the people/atmosphere is like)
Hobbit88 - whats MAWS like? are there a lot of people that play WH 40k/FB there? What size armies to people generally bring? Do you have to pay? Do they have tables and scenery? Sorry bout all the questions!
Id like to visit, but id need to take the train, so id like to get an idea of what its like before going.
MAWS is a well established club, been going for over 25 years.
There's 5 of us that play 40k regularly, about 3 or 4 other people who play 40k and FB also (so about 10 people for each gaming system). The majority of nights, everyone else plays Flames of War, Warhammer Ancients or DBM.
General sized armies are 2,000pts for 40k and Fantasy, I'd say about 500 leway dependant on how much of a rush people are in.
If you're a student or unemployed it's £1 to play for the night, £2 if you're employed. You can pay £5 a year for membership and pay £1 a night if you're employed. They'll also sponsor your entries into competitions, paying the full amount or at least a discounted amount. You'll have to have been coming for so long though. On top of that, they've got cheap drinks and snacks!
They have enough tables for about 20 games on one night, dependant on how people set them up. There's also a side room that either gets used for excess games or RP'ing.
As for scenery, there's about 5 crates of Sci-Fi scenery (2 of them are my own), a Box full of Trees and then hills and roads, rivers and other flat things... For Fantasy / 40k we could fill 6 tables, since we did so for a tournament recently. On top of that, some people have Imperial City scenery and other things.
If you want, pop down one Monday night just for a look around and a chat, rather than lug all your minis down. Where abouts do you live out of interest?
Don't worry about all the questions either, I can understand you want to make sure before going!
If you need anything more, feel free to ask away!
I'm quite interested in heading over to Maws at some point, I'm a member of the East Manchester Club though as they were quite into Napoleonics.
I was thinking of trying to get together enough people to register a University Student wargaming club, as there isn't one currently. Not wanting to tread on Maws toes though. Just in the planning stage at the mo as there's only 2 of us ¬_¬
What University is it for? Or are you thinking of a club that covers multiple Universities in Manchester?
Well I'd only really looked at the rules for the University Of, as that's where I am. I was going to generally nose around other local clubs to try and get an idea of support for the idea. Though societies here are allowed to have members from other unis and non students. But you need 30 students from the specific university to make it official/get funding.
I generally thought it'd be a good idea as I remember being a fresher and having no idea how to find opponents etc. Plus for students the union would be a very central location with a bar, so arranging say a blood bowl league there would be really easy.
Think it's a good idea?
Though I was going to hand in my MPhil Thesis first so I know I'll still be around for 2 more years ¬_¬
Well, I'm also at University located in Manchester, there's a Wargames and Roleplay club there, but it meets on a bad day for me so I don't go...
If you want to get started straight away, speak to either the GW store or Travelling Man / Fanboy 3 in Manchester. They might be able to allocate a fair few of you to get things rolling up until you can get enough members.
Put it this way, we've been trying to recruit members to MAWS for about 2 years now and in that time we've lost 2 players and gained 2, so we have a total of 5 regular players
Keep at it though, if you want it bad enough, it'll happen.
