Default Ravenwing army feasable using the new SM codex?

As the subject says... with captains on bikes allowing for bike squads to be troops (5 or more). Is there any reason why you couldn't play a very similar Ravenwing army using only the new codex?

It seems like you'd even save some points in the process.

Absolutely you could run a Ravenwing-styled army with the new Codex. The Commander-on-bike option is there to allow you to recreate the White Scars, so you can definitely do similar with Ravenwing. Bikers as troops, Commander on a Bike, and Land Speeders from the Fast Attack section. You won't have Ravenwing-specific special rules, but the Marine Codex comes with plenty of other toys to play with.

Lots of fun stuff in the next 'dex. I'll probably run my current Marine force as a codex Marines group (previously Blood Angels) until the BA get updated. All sorts of fun possibilities, from standard Marines, to a lightning force using the Commander-on-bike, or using counts-as Salamanders with He'stan for some insane melta/flamer death.

I guess you could but, the better question is...Why play Ravenwing when you could play White Scars...

True, the WS require a lot of expertise but they can be an awesome army if used right... GW has gone for these as being the speed SMs these days.

There's a Blood Angels 'dex that was published in White Dwarf (and is also featured on the GW website), which has been updated to function with the 5th edition rules. But its not been changed in light of the new Space Marine Codex. So there's a lot of stuff that should be the same but isn't (different point costs for Tactical Marines, fewer options on some of the same units, etc.) Blood Angels are definitely still playable, but the Codex Marines got a BUNCH of new toys to play with, that BA currently can't use. I don't expect ALL of it to end up in the next BA dex, but you'd expect at least a fair chunk to.

Or, like me you've gone out and bought £ 100+ of ravenwing bikes and they're depressingly pap.

Most of the Dark Angels players I know are currently playing the 'new' Marines instead of actual Dark Angels. Using Kantor or Lysander as an HQ gets you an entirely Stubborn army like the Dark Angels used to have.

I can't say for certain (though someone will likely confirm it for me) if the 'new' Marines are 100% better than the Dark Angels or if it's just a case of being dazzled by all the new toys the Marines get.

Nonetheless, I have been seeing a lot of green-liveried and robed vanilla Marines lately.
