On the Specialist Games site, under Game Variants, they just posted a fully downloadable, free copy of the rules for Dark Future, and old (circa 198 cars-based board game from Games Workshop. They include in this 27+MB download all of the expansions and White Dwarf articles that ever went with this thing.
My first question to you forumgoers is: Has anyone played this thing back in its day? Is it any good?
Then, a couple issues I've found with the download. First of all, they give you all of the rules you could possibly need, but they don't provide any templates for the roads, tokens, this swerving template, and so on. I'm not too worried about that; I'm handy with a ruler and AutoCAD, or a T-square and compass, if need be.
What I am wondering is, if someone wanted to get into this now, what would you use for miniatures? Yes, I know I can find some of the originals on eBay or the like, but what if those are too rare? I'm thinking some kinds of slot cars or Matchbox/Hot Wheels (although the latter might be too tough to convert with weaponry and whatnot).
I'm just kind of probing the forum to see what other people think. Thanks in advance for any input!
I build, I convert, I sometimes paint, and once in a while, if I'm really lucky, I might even play.
I do remember the game, never played it though!
I reckon matchbox cars would be a good bet- if you could pick them up in jumble sales or bargain bins even better- if i remember correctly the cars that came with the game originally were around that size, maybe a little smaller..

WTF? Games workshop cars? In the distant future there is only tarmac? I'm gonna check this out!
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.

I still have my Dark Future figures from when I bought the game when it first came out...
Still not got round to painting them... Its only been 20 years...
pft, a poor and cheap copy of steve jackson games "carwars"
Everything you have been told is a lie!
I would like to say Dark Future is a great fun game.We STILL play it at our game club!
(More than we play 40k !)
I think there is a fan site that has all the counters and board section as downloadable PDFs .
Any Matchbox-Corgi size toy car can be converted with spare weapons and bit box bitz!
Steve Jacksons Car Wars is a better rule set, but has not got as much 'character' IMO.
