Hi all, I'm playing in a 'fluffy' tournament soon that tries to discourage overpowered armies.
To this end the point limit is 1,999 - which, in my opinion, screws Tomb Kings over royally. What, either casket OR catapult? Only 3 specials, and chariots now count as one of them instead of core?
But anyway, bitching aside, this is the list I've come up with to take to the event. Never mind the fact that my friend who is much more experienced at fantasy than me managed to beat me twice using ogres over the weekend ...
General - prince with flail, shield, light armour, chariot, chariot of fire, collar of shapesh (yes I know he can't use flail and shield - I had spare points!)
Hierophant - steed, 2x dispel scrolls
Liche Priest - Casket of Souls, dispel scroll, hieratic jar
bowmen x 14
bowmen x 14
bowmen x 14
(2 ranks of 7, or 9 and 5 at the back to give an extra rank bonus)
warriors x 30 with light armour, shields, full command
light horsemen x5
tomb swarms x4
Chariots x4 with standard bearer and banner of undying legion
Casket of Souls (already under priest entry)
What do you think? I played a couple of games over the weekend to trial a list, and frankly I feel pretty stiffed that I can't take a second rare and have chariots as a special unit. the prince goes with the chariot unit, and the banner there will hopefully keep them alive.
under 2k, I'd take the Catapult over the casket, I like it more and it'd give you more points to play around. And at 1999, that's locking down one of your liche priests. Not saying to try to make the most broken list, But what theme are you going to go with? Because I think it's really fun to pick a theme like, "chariots!" or "just archers!" or maybe no infantry and you just go with steeds and chariots. And that is a LOT of dispel scrolls... just throwing that out there. Play what's fun for you, and maybe get your friend to help you out by letting you test your armies a whole bunch. Have fun at the tournament!
I like the casket because of perceived threat and magic. -1 to enemy casting is enormous, not to mention bonus 2d6 power.
In terms of theme ... basically "hold ... hold ... engage! Castle up to suck my opponent forward then scorpion, swarms and carrion hit them in the rear and flanks and chariots and big skellie unit in the front. Not a theme as such in terms of composition, but all chosen to bait my enemy towards me as fast as he can go.
Well from what I've learned from playing and reading up on it, a unit of 20 skeles would hold better than 14, with a champion and a standard... you can possibly outnumber, standard, and 3 ranks. The 5 static CR would help a lot and it should be able to at LEAST last one turn by most units in the game. That'd lock them up for the turn you need to slam them on the side and back me thinks.
So only thing I'd say is bump the archers up to 20 a unit, with Champion and Standard. maybe take out 1 unit for even more points! Your call though. But from what strategy you said, I think bigger units would be better.
