Welcome to Librarium Online!
I appreciate that there are going to be a lot of posts like this with the new army book, but...
I bought the TK boxset a while back, painted them up and havent done anything with them since. My question is what else would I need to buy to make up a viable 1k army?
Aside from the boxset (which i have assembled as 2x16 skellys with spear and shield) I have a Liche Priest also painted up.
Yes. Rip the spears off and give them hand weapons, it's not worth 25% more points and the loss of the parry save to get a couple more S3 attacks out of the unit. Core melee skeletons only do one thing well, which is die as slowly as possible while being a big enough unit that the enemy loses "steadfast"...they're an anvil unit, so they need to focus on preserving their numbers while something else (that's killier) flanks the enemy...that requires them to be as cheap as possible so that you can get more of them, and it requires them to have the best save possible. The spears raise the cost per model and eliminate the only save they can count on, the parry. In a 1000 point army, it's probably reasonable to have a unit of 50 hand weapon and shield skeletons with full command...that's 20 points short of the core points minimum, and in a 1000 point game, it's an indestructible unit!
Other than that, remind me of what's in the box set, and I'll see what I can come up with. Are there chariots? If so, a simple army would be the aforementioned big block of skeletons, a block of six chariots (perhaps one of them is the general?), and the required two characters...either a HLP and a prince or a king and an LP. Either way, putting the general in either the infantry or the chariots is a good idea, but I'd definitely hide the priest 1" behind the infantry to deny LOS, rather than putting him in the unit, where he could get hurt when melee commences.
An alternative would be a block of 40 melee skellies, and then a unit of 10 skeletal bowmen as a bodyguard for the priest...that makes the priest a little harder to kill, but it also tempts you to commit the bowmen to melee combat (which they're just not big enough for, even in a 1k game) and makes the melee block significantly less scary.
Like I said, though, I really need to know what models you have....
