This is my latest attempt at my GT list, Comment is hugely appreciated!
Hierophant – Cloak of Dunes, Dispel Scroll – 160
Tomb King – Great Weapon, Collar of Shappesh – 201
Liche Priest – Casket of Souls – 280
Liche Priest – Skeletal Steed, Dispel Scroll - 140
6 Light Horsemen
20 Skeleton Warriors with Standard Bearer, carrying hand weapons, shields, light armour – 210
20 Tomb Guard with Standard, Champion, Banner of the Undying Legion – 277
Screaming Skulls Catapult - Skull of the Foe - 110
Nice list. not really a lot i could suggest in the way of major changes.
Possibly drop the hierophant's scroll for the hieratic jar.
Where abouts is the king goin? assuming in with the tomb guard, possibly give him some more magic items, although cheap characters have their benefits, you may get pummelled by hard enemy characters, especially in challenges. looking at the list though, not quite sure what id suggest to drop. keep him as he is for now.
Also, id drop 1 of the light cavalry, as they play a weak support role, in order to get musicians into the skellie and tomb guard blocks. the extra 1CR in a draw may just mak an enemy unit flee, or stop you loosing a casualty.
The King is going in the Tomb Kings but against some enemies he can go in the normal skele block if the Tomb Guard will be fine without him. Yeah the Jar is good, I am trying to find that extra 25 points. I will drop one of the horsemen. They are there to sit between the two infantry blocks (this is theory atm, i can let you no how it works on Thursday when i try it). The idea is that nobody will really want to waste shots/magic to take them down, meaning that both infantry blocks know that they can be flanked by them and it gives one of the Priests more maneuverability. Chariots would be just as good for this but their main purpose is to provide a US5 flank charge, and for this the horses will do and are some 50 points cheaper. It also means that the other two units of chariots can go down the actual flanks, rather than stay defensive. Alternativly they can be used as sacrifical lambs to draw away eney units, (especially against frenzied units such as chaos, or charge war machines)
What is your generic TK 2000pt army?
it changes from time to time, im looking at swapping out the second priest for a prince in my next game, adding more hitting power with only a slight decrease in magic. Anyway, at 2K i field:
Armour of Ages
Vambraces of Sun
Collar of Shapesh
Liche Priest (H)
Cloak of Dunes
Casket of Souls
24 Skeleton warriors
Banner of the UDL
(king in here)
25 Skeleton Warriors
3 Tomb Scorpions
Screaming Skull Catapult
Skulls of the foe
Just under 2K
I like it. I see you don;t want your King to die, not too sure about the armour of the ages though, think it is a little overpriced. My only other worry is lack of magic defence. No Scrolls at all? How do you find that, I have never really tried as there is a lot of magic out there that can really harm the undead, and we are generally poor at producing dispel/power dice to dispel spells. I am trying to decide at the moment between Ushabti and Carrion, do you find you do okay without the flyers? I am a huge fan of Ushabti and really want to fit them in somewhere, they are just so expensive!
If the king dies, not only do i loose my best fighter, but also throw away 400+vps. i used to always have him in a chariot, but recently took him out as i decided that against most armies he just got kiled far to often, never in combat, but to CR. The armour, well, the extra wound is just nice (for dark elves, they have the same armour, which also gives +1T, and it costs 65 points more than the TK version!)
No scrolls, well, i have never really been a fan of them. one use only, and id rather take more troops, especially in a TK army, as you have so much of the list's points taken up by characters, you need all the troops to fight you can get imo.
Also, mag defense is never a ral problem Especially with the new rules, there are less magic heavy offensive armies now, most magic used is just support magic. % dispel dice is fine at 2K, i just focus on which spells take priority dispel. also the scorpions have MR1 (i think all undead constructs should get this) and the enemy has -1 casting due to the casket. i just dont worry about enemy magic, stuff can be healed! Also remember we still get the 2 basic power dice to dispel RiP.
As for the flyers, im just not a fan. tbh, maybe its just my tactics, but for the crossfire to work with them, they require too much tactical placement to bother with, i just kill stuff the old fashioned way!
Ushabti, to be honest, they are purely awesome! when used in units of 4. any more and they get too expensive. any less they cannot dish out enough damage, loose combat nd crumble. The only downside i have with them is they should be toughness 5, not 4, or a better Armour save, they cant take hits very well at the moment. but they can still dish out as much as they take!
Also, if you really want Ushabti in your list, the best suggestion i can make is:
Remove the light horsemen
Downgrade the tomb guard to skellie warriors (with bows possibly, as i may have already said, i never upgrade my skellies) and drop the champion.
Also note the banner of UDL is (arguably) better on normal skellies, as it has a higher chance or restoring more wounds, although Tomb guard fight better...
Should almost give you enough points for 4 Ushabti
It is doable by dropping the Carrion, downgrading the Tomb Guard to Skeles, losing the Skull of the foe and dropping the horsemen. I just somehow think that it is too big-a trade off, what do you think? Two whole units gone and two downgrades just for one unit? Oh there must be an easier way lol! Ushabti must be taken in units of 4 you are right, its the only way they work!
Also you are right about protecting your King, I just think that the armour of the ages is overpriced, though it is still arguably the best armour we have (our magic items are generally pants). I might try to fit the vambraces on the King.
Chariots with Kings in are good, but they just don't have enough punch to break on the charge, which is why I just run two small chariot units now.
hmm yea slight points miscalculation by me there! lol.
yea looking at it, best changes imo, downgrade T.Guard and skellies to just units of 20 skellies with bows, loose the champ, light horsemen, and... drop both scrolls... lol, not sure how you woould feel about that.
Just keep the list as it is, forget the Ushabti for now. if some of the units dont work out for you, then get the Ushabti in there
Yeah sounds good to me, I'll give it a try tomorrow at my Gaming Night. The only other thing I would like is the flail of skulls on the King, but I want to see how he does when fielded 'on the cheap' first lol
