I was looking over chariots and realised that their champions are more worth it than most as they afford the unit extra protection as rank and file wounds are not carried over to them and visa versa, so if a unit of three chariots takes 8 rank-and file wounds only 6 wounds will be taken on the rank and file and the other two discarded. Have I got the wrong end of the stick?
If the rank and file takes 8 S7 or greater wounds, then all chariots but the champions (and any characters) would be splintered.
They aren't more worth it than other champions, as other champions do the same thing. In a large unit, wounds wouldn't be randomised on the champion from shooting etc.
In the small unit case you suggested, the 8 wounds would be randomised between the rank and fil, and the champion. So they would all still do damage (possibly).
I think i can see whatn you are getting at though, and when i first began playing TK i thought the same thing. Then once i started getting more experianced i saw the error of my ways. Chariot champions are always a complete waste of points imho, just like champions in most other units that TK can have.
I'd actually go as far as to say chariot champions are a bigger waste of points than other champions as they cost a boatload more. The only champions that are worth anything are the TG champ and a skeleton champ if there is a character in the unit.
Yeah there is no way I could justify the points of a chariot champion. For a measly 1 extra skeleton attack, you pay half the cost of a whole new chariot! One of the most overpriced things in the game IMO.
I see your point that they could potentially discard wounds, but seriously.. If your chariots are taking 8 wounds from something, they're f'ed anyway, to put it bluntly. That means you're down by 6 or so from the wound that killed your other chariots, you're most likely outnumbered and have ranks against you, so the last champion that survived is about to crumble anyway. If you only attack where you can win you should never need to worry about those extra attacks carrying over.
Yea if your in a CC where your taking 8 wounds, either you charged your chariots into something you really shouldn't have, or you got charged by something you really really didn't want to. Either way...your pretty much behind the 8 ball at that point and a champion isn't going to matter much.
I was under the impression that if you had 5 models left and one was your champion, then the unit took 5 wounds the champion still died (assuming infantry). I thought it was only hero and lord choices that had to be targetted seperately.
If you are referrng to 5 instant kill (S7+) wounds in the case of the chariot, then no. The wounds aredirected at normal rank and file troops, and hence i believe (i may be wrong on this) that the chamion cannot be killed as attacks need to be allocated in order to hurt him.
Same as with a character in a unit, if a unit of 9 R+F and a character took 12 wounds (assume no saves) then the character wouldnt die if all the attacks were directed at the unit.
Note however, in the case of 5 TK Chariots being splintered by S7 hits, chances are the champ will die through Cres anyway.
Again however this goes back to the point if your getting hit by a barrage of S7 attacks from being charged (Krox come to mind), then you're in pretty deep shit and have more to worry about than your champion dying. Like how your chariots got charged by the Krox in the first place and whats going to happyen to the flank the chariots were holding.
