I was wondering what you guys thought of Settra.
IMO I think he is a powerful character, one of the most powerful i've seen, good Sv and WSv, The Will of Settra is a great rule for him and his units, same as Settra the Great rule and The Curse of Settra is also pretty decent. His unit strength is just unbelievable, it has to be the single largest unit strength in the Warhammer world by one creature!
But there are downsides. 1) He takes up 2 Lord choices, so you need 3k to field him, and I'd much rather have 1 Tomb King and High Priest of my own design. 2) You cant take and Priests at all, even High Priests, so not so much magic, and you can only use the Will on 3 of his units specifically. 3) Half of the Army must be spent on Chariots, Tomb Guard and HC, which I think is very difficult to make around, 1500 points on those 3 units alone! I wouldnt know where to start.
So thats my opinion of Settra. He is powerful but difficult to build the army around. But what do you guys think
Settra's army is one of the most magical armies in the game. You get a MWBD for every Chariot, TG, or Heavy Cav unit in your army, plus the 2x3d6 incantations for him being the equivalent of a LHP.
Lets say you have say 6-8 3 man chariot units, 2 or 3 TG units and 2 or 3 Heavy Cav units along with Settra and a Tomb Prince or 2.
Thats 10 - 14 MWBD castings! That is a insane amount of magic. Lets say you have 12 units that fall under his MWBD. You get 1D6 per spell. 1/2 of those statstically will be a 4+. To dispel each spell, your opponent needs to use a minimum of 1 DD per spell. On a roll of a 4+, 2 DD are needed to be sure it's dispelled. So we're looking at 18 DD needed to have a chance, to stop every spell. Plus, Settra gets 2 more spells @ 3d6 each for being the Heirophant and a LHP, and each TP has his own MWBD. Plus, most lists will atleast have the BotUL in it.
Thats 20 Incantation dice for 16 (16!!!!) spells per turn. Good luck stopping that. (Heh, I always knew Settra's list was heavy in magic, just never really sat down to think about how heavy it really was ).
The bigger problem with Settra's list is that it contains only 2 DD and he can only cast Summoning twice per turn (3 if you have the BotUL).

I think that you will find that although Settra is quite good with his offensive magic... there is also the issue of the defensive capabilities in your opponents magic phase. In short when you think about it, at 3000pts you will be generally facing a 4th level Wizard and a CC General, as well as a few 2nd level wizards and other heroes...
Sure Settra is good when he gets all his "will be done" incantantions but he doesn't count as a wizard fo generating dispell die and therefore if you run him get used to armies blasting you with powers in their magic phases. Also you can only get one summon spell a turn in your own phase.
The prospect of running 1500 pts worth of Chariots, HC and tomb guard isn't too daunting, in 2000 pt games I normally run about 1100ots of those units anyway with some good sucess, as well as a few support units.
I think the other thing which you have forgot though to take into account is that he is around 800pts if I am not mistaken which means he is quite expensive to feild.
There are a few thoughts that I have anyway... great against dwarves though.
Well, it seems that you guys have good reasons there, maybe I will get Settra once I have my List sorted. Thanks8Y
Im afraid id have to say opposite. Even with his insane magic offense, his lack of defense is what puts me off him. At most, you have 2 Dispel Dice and a scroll... at 3K. Thats nowhere near enough, even for someone like me who seems to underrate non TK magic generally. Apart from that though, he is an amazing Character. Maybe what really puts me off him is that i prefer a defensive list.
Hence why i would have to say i prefer Khalida far more. Though i am going to post up a possibly slightly controversial list including her in a bit, just an idea i had last night...
I do prefer Khalida also, but I posted this to see how people would field and/or use him. I guess the dispel dice are important, but as Spector said, as long as you get to combat by turn 2 your almost in the clear.
Yea but I'm crazy like that heh, I'll go into battle with only 2 DD to sustain me. (scrolls...what's a scroll, TK don't need no stinking scrolls!)
well what can i say... look at my picture..........
i was playing against a decent dwarf player but he missed a vital shot of his cannon which could have took khalidas head off..... my mistake i tried to block her eith my chariots but they died and well im tryin to say that khalida dosent seem to scare the oppnent imo so they wont shoot at her at much !!!
Khalida is one of those special characters that is underratted by most opponents... her strength inmy opinion is two fold... 1 you can give your archers poisioned attacks which means generally half your hits will auto wound... and also the fact that she gets off RS a turn and it can't be dispelled!
Settra is such a big target for your enemy though... he is on a chariot which means he can move quickly and his offensive magic is nasty so he is going to get a lot of attention from your opponent. But Khalida being more defensive and not coming at the enemy makes he opponent see her as less a threat.
