Sorry guys, I know this question has been asked about as billion and one times but I just need clarification on a few things. First of all, Why no spears? doesnt it give a rank bonus?
and second of all, i want a fast, hard hitting army with ramnged suppourt, any list reccomendations assuming i have battalion models + prince in chariot + whatever else i should need for roughly 1000pts (ssc?)
Thankyou in advance,
Ranks give you rank bonuses, spears allow you to fight in two ranks. The downside is you don't get the +1 AS for hand weapon and shield, and it costs more points. Most people are of the opinion that getting better armour saves for skeletons is a better option since you don't expect them to kill much anyway, in fact it isn't their job to kill much. Better to help them survive so they can provide static combat res and hold an opponent unit in combat while you smash them in the flanks with chariots/cavalry/Ushabti.
For fast and hard hitting, go for plenty of chariots with either scorpion, carrion or Ushabti whichever you prefer. In 1000 points, the chariots will count as special choices so you will have to take some skeletons, I guess if you want the main focus to be fast and hard hitting take a unit or two of 10 archers, and save the block of hand weapon and shield skellies for 2k. Back up with a SSC if you have the points.
Reasons people, including myself, recommend never using spears for skellies are:
- They cost more than using HW/S
- Your save is worse
- With their profile, skellies cant kill a thing anyway!
Basically youre better off using HW/S for sponge units to take damage, or Archers for their ranged capability (Or combine the two like i do)
As for your army, fast with ranged support, that could be quite hard to achieve, as the Defensive and Offensive TK options dont compliment each other too well when used to the extremes. I think your best bet would be to run a list (similiar to mine) which plays defensively, but can hit hard and fast when the enemy gets close, hopefull having been weakened up quite a bit.
For this list, Id say put your Prince on foot. But if you really want him in a chariot then put him with a unit of 3, possibly with standard and Undying Legion or Warbanner.
I think youll want 2 priests, but these can boost your total character cost quite a bit.. If you think you can survive with the magic from just one then the second isnt vital. If you do take two, keep them both Cheap. Only the Cloak of Dunes for the Hiero.
Thinking defensively means Skellie archers. however to start with id suggest going with 10 archers and the rest HW/S troops (with FC) from the batallion skellies. See how they work out for you.
Other units to definitely consider are Tomb Scorpions and Screaming Skull Catapults. If you only have 1 Scorp, try and get a Swarm base in too.
