Hi guys I had a 1k game last night with my TK against an empire army and the thing that annoyed me the most about his army was the fact that his level2 wizard had a rather pain in the (well you get the idea) magical item called the rod of power. basically he used it to save 2 power dice a turn and use them as dispel dice in my turn giving him a total of 6 dispel dice on a roll of 2+. I only had a BotUL on chariots, my Tomb Prince's 1 spell, a hieratic jar and 2 incatations on my 2 priests. This meant about 4 spells per turn (two at low levels) that he could easily dispel and needless to say that was devastating against my army which relies a LOT on magic. I was wondering if you fellow TK players had any ideas to combat this insanely cheesy magic item as it really ticked me off.
For the record, it's not cheesy. It costs over 30 points, which is quite a lot at 1K.
There's no real way to counter it, other than killing the Wizard. But remember that if he's saving it for defense, then he's not using it in an offensive nature.
Don't have the Book, but I imagine there a re a few Magic Items that you'll have which can do something (like the O&G Staff of Stealing- the O&G player takes one dice from the opponents power pool and adds it to his dispel pool, that one irritates me quite a bit). I suppose lots of Bound spells would help. Just make him keep rolling dispel attempts.
Im guessing he had 2 mages then? 2 Ddice basic, 2 lv 2 mages, and 2 from the rod. You have 1 Bound, and 5 dice...
You could add int he Staff of Ravening for an extra Bound spell, and being PL 4+ your opponant may be wanting to use 2 dice against it.
Basically youll have the same problem when fighting Khorne, or Dwaves at low level. Lizzies can doa similiar thing too.
In the case where your magic is nullified, youre going to have to beat them elsewhere.
Use Tomb Scorpions for mage hunting, even if it means them charging a fully ranked up unit, just direct all your attacks at the Mage and you will likely kill it. The Scorp may die, but will have probably made back his points atleast.
Second thing id recommend is and SSC, if you dont have one already. Even without the extra magic phase shot, it can still devastate the enemy.
Is your army list on the forums? and maybe post up a rough list of your opponants stuff too, that wat we can see where else it will be best for you to counter, rather than trying to beat a lost ause, you are already maxed out in magic.
Deveiver, remember that empire can get warrior priests which are effectively a combat hero with a free dispel dice and some useless bound spells (bloody expensive too).
Simply solution to your problem: KILL THE WIZARD. It's not that hard, he's toughness 3 and only has 2 wounds, just charge him with some carrion, chariots, tomb scorpion, swarms, cavalry or a prince. Even skeletons could kill him over a few turns (3 attacks, 4 with a champion, on the wizard hitting and wounding on 4+).
Staff of Ravening was a golden idea. Empire troops are low T and most of them don't have an amazing armor save with the knights and some of their heroes being the exception.
Thanks for the advice guys. I already have 2 scorps in my army but my problem was that I didn't know he had the rod of power until after the game started and I had deployed my scorps to give him to many targets to kill throught shooting. I will put my list and his in the army list section so you can have a look Deceiver.
