I haven't used Ushabti in my competitive lists for quite a while, but the more I think about it the more I feel they have to offer. With a potential 15" charge per turn and (assuming you take 4) a maximum of 12 strength 6 WS4 attacks they are pretty powerful, and the fact you can raise them back and that the crumble less than other undead in my oppinion makes them better than other ogre size models. I feel their problem lies in their position as a special choice. Once the two scorpions are carrion are chosen, assuming you have a King and therefore chariots as core that leaves you with one more special choice at 2k for either Ushabti, Tomb Guard or even another unit of Carrion.
Maybe we should all start playing at 2k, for a start that would mean we could have 2 scorpions, Usabti, Tomb Guard and Carrion, a Tomb King and a LHP, two catapults and a casket of souls, oh the possibilities!
well i love my ushabti, i actually just bought three a month ago, played maybe 3 games with em. They are dangerous to everyone. I massacred my friends kroxigor on the charge, and without GW i got to attack again. WS 4 is pretty nice against most things, giving you mainly 3+ to hit and str6 is just damn good. Add fear and the chance to heal wounds = godly. Though its damn sad wen they die.
I began using a unit of 3 when i forst started, but they allways died too easily so got swapped out for scorps, i used 4 of them. Getting another Ushabti and falling in love with the models however means they are back for me, along with 2 scorps and 5 carrion. They really are pretty awesome, and allow me to actually do damage in combat!
If we all began to play a 3K it would be awesome, and i think TK would seee a huge increase in victory margain
Well in the LHP list that I have made up, the special choices consist of:
3x Chariots w/ BotUL
In a TK list, I add in an extra Scorpion and Tomb Guard, and remove the Ushabti and Carrion.
I think Ushabti are a good choice. I usually try to get a unit in, they are just a hard hitting juggernaut that can do a lot of damage to an opponent infantry unit without being anywhere near as fragile as chariots. I'm not a fan of Tomb Guard at all, and I find one decent sized unit of carrion do the job for me fine without a second one. So my specials at 2k usually consist of Scorp (sometimes 2), Carrion, Ushabti (sometimes 2).
Just really want to emphasise what others have said.
I always used to use a single unit of three but found that they were easily getting wiped out either by shooting or the second round of any combat I actually managed to get them in to.
Because of this I swapped them out for an extra scorpion until recently when I decided to paint up more Ushabti and try out using four of them. This works really well as it means they can take alot more damage and and also put alot out. I rarely go to war without them. In 3K games I will always take two units of four of them. Working together they are truly lethal and can take on most things.
Definately not redundant models though.
