Im a little torn between these two weapons for my Tomb King.
I know the DoE is really good, but the Flail could be just as handy, and better in certain situations eg. Chalanges, large monsters.
So, was after opinions to help make up my mind.
Flail of skulls is only really better against large monsters or things immune to killing blow, such as an OK army. Apart from that, DOE will prove a much better way of killing characters, and the ability to deal 6 attacks in the magic phase (well, more like 3 lots of 2 attacks) and then follow up with another 4 killing blow attacks at such a high strength will prove more useful then just the st bonus first round and inflicting single wounds on standard models...
That being said, King with DOE and prince with FOS?
DoE would be the special weapon of choice for a Tomb King on foot.
The Flail of Skulls would be the special weapon of choice for a Tomb King in a Chariot.
Thats how I view them.
well i personally want to win the combat, not challenges. So if your TK has FOS you should challenge right away so u get the +2str bonus in the first round of combat. But in my case i would use something else to just crush the opponent, not the leader. So TK in chariot with flail of radiance or soemthing would be great to win the combat. But of course killing a lot of soldiers or wounding the leader is obviously anyones own opinion to make.
I understand the whole s7 thing, but I reckon DoE would be more beneficial in a chariot than the FoS, because of the much larger base size. Against most infantry, he'll score at least 8 automatic hits, and they still have the killing blow rule. Combine that with Smiting, and we're talking a LOT of hits. S6 is still pretty good, too, and its all the time, not just first turn.
Anyway, Ill stick the DoE for now, and later on I can chop and choose if I want. Changes like this that dont need any new models aren't that big a deal, really.
I need some clarification about the DOE
It's a GW so it strikes last.
A King can upgrade to a GW for a very low cost and still get the plus 2 bonus
A King gets 4 attacks
You have to choose between the 2 types of attack
If you choose the special than approx 3 models will take 2 hits each.
With a max of 6 hits you are only getting 2hits more that the 4 that the King might get anyways.
My questions are:
Do they get to save those hits?
Is it worth the points to take the DOE if you only get 2 extra hits?

Yes its two extra attcks, but they AUTO HIT. There's a big difference. Add auto hit + killing blow together, and te cost is justified.
Then theres the magic pahse, too. A normal GW gets 1 extra attacks. DoE can forfeit the one attacks for its special abilty..6 auto hits. Thats 12 hits in one turn.
Remeber, tho, that these hits count as 'allocated' so hitting a 1 wound model twice, and wounding it twice still only counts as 1 wound. You have a VERY good chance of killing that model with 2 S7 KB hits.

um, im not a 100 percent sure about this but im pretty sure that during the magic phase u only get one attack that benefits from the 2 autohits, thus u only get 2 extra hits in the magic phase along with 6 autohits in the combat. But still autohits + killing blow + 2st = god
