I was able to field my first ever TK warhammer (any warhammer for that matter) today. It was a 500pt battle against a ork/goblin army.
Yes, I lost...spectacularly! But I had a blast in what was possibly the worlds longest 500pt game (~2.5-3 hours). Neither me or my opponent had any experience with warhammer (although he plays a lot of 40k) so there was numerous rule checks etc. Neither of us played 100% by the book due to misunderstandings/forgetting etc....but neither of us really cared to much.
On to the details. My army consisted of:
Liche Priest (cloak of dunes)
Skeleton warriors (20x, bows)
Light Cavalry (5x)
Screaming Skull Catapult
His was very melee heavy. No ranged except for one wizard type guy. He also had the boar/chariot thing as well.
We played on a completely flat terrain with no obstacles or any obstructions. I had set my two units of archers (10x each) side by side in-front of my liche priest. To the right and slightly angled was my light cav, and behind and inbetween the ranks of archers and cav was my SSC. I had absolutely horrible luck with my dice. I only managed to take out one guy by ranged for the entire game...
My tomb swarm rocked. It took a beating but won the battle and forced a leadership check, which when failed caused his boar/chariot to flee off the map. My archers mainly stayed in place, as did my light cav..shooting (and missing). My light cav charged as one of his units got close
The rest was battles of attrition, dispel on my casts...and me just slowly getting whittled down and causing just a bit of attrition.
So how can I improve? I know that 500pts is brutal with TK...but I really want to improve. Any thoughts/suggestions?
At 500 points, nope, thats about what you can expect every game. Best think to would to get up to 1000 points, and start running 3 characters (Prince and 2 Priests).
lol yea the game changes dramatically for tk from 500 to 1k to 2k. I think each of those need very different tactics. And yea expect to give up a few hours for each game. I like to play 2v2 with my friends and i think we spend 5-6 hours for 4k points per side.
One thing, max number of units in a Border Patrol army is 4 (not inc Character) So 2x10 bowmen is technically illegal. Use them in a unit of 20 anyway.
Ok thanks...neither of us were too worried about the rules. I am hopefully going to give it another go tomorrow. About the units though, can't I have 2 units of 10 that re-rank as the enemy gets close so it would just be one unit of 20?
As long as you aren't playing by the Border Patrol rules.
You what Spec!? No, ewd by the rules in any game you cnnot have 2 units combining into one. You could ask your opponant about it though if you like, treat it as a house rule.
I'd just like to take the time to point out my agreement with our fiery friend here. 2 units merging together is against the rules. As a house rule, go ahead, knock yourself out (not literally).
Not a TK player, but I'd say try giving your Skellies spears/shields perhaps? You could then use your other units to support the Skellie unit. Place the Liche behind your main unit. Granted, I'm not exactly the Tactica Tombkingica here, but if you want to try something, the card's right there.
Never recommend TK Spear Skellies again!
As for an explanation. Hes against Orcs. Low armour, so arrows will kill a few, knocking of a rank bonus or two before combat. In combat Skellies cant kill a thing so the extra Attacks rarely help.
Hey, as I said, I'm not the Tactica Tombkingica, so my word should rarely be taken for it.
