Mirage banner is okay but has a pretty narrow application -you're probably best off avoiding that one for now and stick with BotUL, War banner and IotSE.
I think you've misread the entry for IotSE. Simply put, it just gives you +1 to hit on the first round of combat. It does not grant any extra attacks at all.

As for the question about match ups...

Elves comes in three delicious flavours of course and much depends on wich one you're up against. Poor old wood elves are easy meat for us (and seemingly everyone else come to that), high and dark elves can be problematic if you don't have a good list or know how to handle them properly. For the most part we can give any elven army a really good game because our shooting is so formidable against their low toughness and typically low armour. The trick is to shoot at what your archers will be most effective against -NOT what scares you the most.

Dwarves used to be another pretty good match up for us but they have been bolstered significantly by the 8th edition ruleset. On the face of it our armies are completely different but when you look at them a bit closer you'll see they actally work in a very similar way by leveraging their high CR. They have an edge in combat but this is offset by our stellar magic phase wich will typically mean we can out maneuver them. For this reason the stunties can give you problems if you go in recklessly with all guns blazing and expect to win -you wont. For most lists your best bet with these is to stand off them and break them down with ranged attacks (most notably the SSC) before you even attempt to try and tackle them in close combat. It's a tricky match up and much will depend on the exact lists used and the relative strength of the generals.

Generally speaking we can outshoot anybody and opponents who field gunlines against us are in for a tough time of it.

Sacred Eye is awesome for a large block of TG containing a TK, since they'll almost certainly end up hitting on 3s, and the King often on 2s in the first round of combat (regardless of who charged). That's going to make things very ugly for the opposition. It at least negates their charge bonus, and could even make enough of a difference to cause them to break. If you're playing heavily armored (expensive/few in number)foes, the banner is going to lead to more killing blows. Either way, the banner is going to remove enemy models. Undying Legion is best used on your second most important infantry unit, be it a secondary TG unit or your largest/most important unit of bowmen. But I'd always take both banners.

If you were exceptionally ambitious, you could try to make a deathstar, with both banners (one on a BS in a large block of TG, along with a challenge monkey TK and a prince with the spear of antharak...with the king eating up the challenges, and the spear plus BOTUL healing, the unit would be really hard to wear down...especially with at least one priest on the board for additional healing. I'm not sure it would work very well, but it might be fun to try.

is the information in this thread still viable for 8th edition? I usually use Dark Elves or WoC and the both provide saves and resistance for all types of attacks. They can also be victorious without their hero/heroes alive. Tomb kings on the other hand worry me. I usually face Empire, VC, and WoC. I would expect WoC to be a closer batter than the later two. Empire will destroy my defensive army with mortars, hell blasters, and cannons. Vampire will dance across the table and 1. either destroy me in CC, or 2. destroy my hero/heroes with death magic. I'm not seeing how you can competitively play with Tomb Kings, prove me wrong. I do like the army a lot and I have a battalion gathering dust in my closet.

Truth is that TK can't win the battles for you, as some other armies can. When playing TK, you need to be a skilled tactician, because the strengths of the army are based on fear and tactical magic (allowing you to move, shoot, strike additional times each round - it's devastating when used correctly). And, to answer your first question, this thread is written while still in 7th ed. There are many good points written here, but some things are of course outdated. Don't just read, but analyze what's written, and I'm sure you'll find tips.

Thanks, that's what I was expecting , I came from using Skaven which is a throw everything at them and expect to win by outnumbering to Dark Elves who have small numbers and have to rely on a combination of other factors. I will give these TK's a shot since I really like challenges.

so I have a question regarding incantations. I believ drain magic affects incantations in how difficult they are to cast but how exactly does it do this?

Perhaps we can get it redone sometime soon . My local area has pretty much quit Fantasy(yes I know, horrible) because of some of the game breaking Magic so I won't really get to help, also I don't really know TKs all too well in this edition.
