I am currently assembelling a squad of skele archers and i was wondering if i should give them a musician/standard bearer to give leadership?
also does the musician model still allowed to be equipt with/fire a bow?
All command models are assumed to be armed in the same way as the rest of the unit, so yes the Musician still has a bow and can fire it, but feel free to model him however you like.
What size is the archer unit?
Usual units are either 10/12 or 20-25
If you are using a unit of 10 or so, then don't use any command.
If taking a unit of 20+, its all down to personal preference.
I use units of 20, with Musician. When the enemy gets close, they reform into a decent combat sponge.
Id add a banner to one unit in games over 2K, but only because they also have a magic banner then. At 2K, I don't take banners on the large archer units any more. I used to, but decided against it as they can cost you 100Vpts if the enemy takes out all the skellies (All too easily done in one turn if they get charged by 4 Ogre like things)
My advice would be to make the banner model as an extra, and decide through gaming whether he would be an advantage or disadvantage.
As for the Champ (may aswell round off while im here) in general, no.
However if you know you will be facing a Character on Monstrous mount, then take Champs. If the Char charges your skellies, challenge, die, resurrect. Saves you a lot of dead skellies, and hence you need to cast fewer spells to keep the unit alive. Just make sure you get 1 spell off to keep the Champ standing.
in a squad of 16 should i have music?
Ooh.. thats a tough call. 5 x 3, +1 for when they get to combat. What size pts game will you be planning to use this unit of 16 in?
units of 16 at 500-1500
Hmm, ok. At 1K and under, yes. Above 1K, try and get some more models into the unit, proxy if need be, to make them 20 strong, and keep the music
If you expect them to see combat as a tarpit unit champions are worth their weight in gold, the ability to challenge heroes and enemy champions and absorb their attacks instead of removing models is priceless, i agree with Phoenix that standards are expensive vp sinks but they are great if the unit is well supported.
NB: I think i am going to experiment and take the non magic banner off my second unit of skellie bowmen this week to see what effect it has. BotUL is amazing though i am not cutting that!
How do you expect to defeat me when I am forever and you are just a man...
