Which combination of weapons would be better to make 2 core units from the 32 skele warriors in the battalion?
16 bowmen and 16 skele warriors with shield
id just do all bowmen, shield and hand wep skellies are pretty much gonna fall just as easy, in CC, but if you got some bows you can get 2-3 turns off of shooting before you get charged, and people will generally ignore them and go for bigger units in CC anyway.
Also if you want to, instead of buying a bunch of tomb guard you could put shields and hand weps on a few skellies and use those instead.
Cheers for the advice.
How big would you make units of bowmen?
e.g 12 or 16...
I find shield units to be effective.. They will survive a lot better in combat with the hand weapon and shield bonus, and you won't have to worry about reforming them to get either ranks or effective shooting. They have their job and they do it rather than trying to multitask.
I'd make a unit of 20 hand weapon and shield, and a unit of 12 archers. The archers you run along next to your big block, shooting as they go, then magic them into combat on the flank when the combat unit charges to get rid of rank bonuses, gain outnumber and get +1 for flank charge on the opponent.
but I have heard that normal skeles are pretty useless in combat
See the link in my reply to your 1K Army List, basically 19 HW/S, 10 bows and 3 (HW/S) Command models.
I use 19 skeletons with a full command and a tomb king with a great weapon. This gives me a good solid unit that can absorbe some hits and keep comming and with the tomb king they can try to use their magic to move forward. I may loose some but they do what they need to sponge and sit there holding the enemy!
i did what phoenix and made 19 hw, 10 bows and 3 command
