Maybe this is too general a question, and it's more list specific, but I have 64 skellies to assemble.
Do you go one bow for one HW/LA/S skelly in your list, or would you rather have more of one or the other on hand. I'm starting to lean toward 40 LA/HW/S and 24 bows. More skellies are in the cards in the future, but I'm hoping not to buy any more boxes for a little while
I would first make 40 skellies with bows because tomb kings are primarily a defensive army and THEN I would maybe make some skellies with hand weapons. But I know you'll want bowmen because they work well with our rare units (not including the bone giant) and our special units (carrion and scorpions make great distractions, war machine killers and they harrass the enemy as they come foreward) so bowmen are the way to go for your first fourty skellies. I hope this helped
I disagree with TK being primarily a defensive army, Its all in the comp of your army. I usually only run a unit of 10 skellie bowman to deal with random small skirmishing units. Skellies that I use are all HW/LA/SH. They are in units of 24, ranks of 5. (enough for the +3 rank bonus plus 4 wounds) If I had those 64 skellies, I'd do 48 of them HW/LA/SH, 2 standards, and 14 bowmen because I rely on skellie blocks getting into combat and staying there until the other nastiness in my army gets in.
I started out with 2 skellies boxes, and was told to make 20 Spear/Shield () and 12 bowmen. All the spearmen have since had their arms snapped off and replaced with bows
Maybe make up the skellies without arms, and play a few practice games before you put their arms on and start painting? (note, leave off heads too incase of quivers needing to be put on). See what you prefer overall and then decide what to make.
Personaly i use all bowmen, allways, in a poor attempt to influence your decision
All bowmen *was* something I was considering since they are only marginally less effective than LA/HW/S in combat, and we really only win through static res and fear anyhow. Having said that, a block of 24 with that nice 4+ save in close combat would be a nice anvil...
Maybe I'll do 40/24 bows/HW and Shield...
i believe, IMO, that you will win more games agasint ItP armies with Bows becuase...
like stated above we win through CR and fear but if the other army is immune to that well... make em pin cushions, they can only save so many with good dice rolls.
but to armies that are not ItP make good blocks of HW/LA that way you got your CR then add a flank attack with (insert flanking unit here) you got an instant win in CC
so in other words i woudl say make the ratio 4:1 unless you know you will fight more ItP armies then make more bows accordingly
Hope i helped
Yeah, every bit helps.
As for ITP armies, my regular opponents will be Orcs, DE, Lizzies, WoC and DoC.
I'm glad to see you didnt bring up arming them with spears. Like Phoenix, I too have changed the arms on my initally speared skellies.
i do admit though IMO i think the spear skelles look the best rank and file lol
but for gaming HW/LA/S all the way
I origionally had 16 spearmen and 16 bowmen, and then I changed all of my bowmen to spearmen... whoops But I learned from my mistake and from now on I just make bowmen! And my opponents don't mind if I use spearmen for bowmen.
