Does anyone else use these delightful things? I seem to be the only one of the group that i play regularly with that uses the damned thing, and everyone complains that i bitch about him (I did, but thats because he failed TWO look out sirs in one game, before eventually failing to kill a peasant and dying in return). I just wondered what people give the dude, etc?
My standard outfitting is Icon o'Rakaph, L/A (gotta get a 6+, oooh yeah). costing me 107, and giving me a great maneuvaribilty boost, but then if he gets slapped, he dies pretty easy.
I typically only use the IB in either very large games, or in a specific army that has a very high infantry build centered around a dangerous Tomb Guard unit.
The TG unit is only 15 guys large, has full command and the Warbanner. They are joined by the IB with the Icon of the Sacred Eye and also a Tomb King with the Crook and Flail of Radiance, Vembraces of the Sun and Armor of the Ages.
Enemies charge the relatively small unit of TG expecting to win with overwhelming ranks and outnumber, only to be chopped up by the King (who strikes first, hits most things on 2s and wounds most things on 2s or 3s). Then, because he hasn't much left to do a whole lot of damage, my TG and IB strike with +1 to hit, S4 and Killing Blow, which usually nets me five to six kills from everything.
Then with the two ranks, standard, war banner, Icon Bearer, plus all the kills, it usually chases off most enemy rank n file.
Aside from that, I tend to stay away from the guy. He doesn't suck, but for the slightly higher cost, a Prince is much better.
At 3K i think id use one, alongside a King in either TG or the usual Bow Skellies. Both Icon of Rakaph and BotUL in there, King with DoE + CoS... would just be fun to try out
ALternatively, i may get to ''paperhammer'' this list soon:
Icon Bearer w/ Bot Hidden Dead
5 Light Cav
2 Scarab Swarms
May throw an SSC it but i think that may spoil the effect... lol.
I think that the biggest problem with the Icon Bearer is that, playing an army that marches on its incantations, it brings nothing to the magic phase.
A Tomb Prince is a much better buy, for less than the cost of a Tomb Swarm you can switch and Icon Bearer out with a Tomb Prince who comes equipped as a level 1 mage that always gets its spell off and a stat line that makes him one of the best Hero selections in Warhammer. Coupled with the fact that the two 50+ Standards that only the BSB can take aren't especially good in an all commers list...
I can see his viability in an army built around Infantry or Constructs, but in an environment where you have to squeeze everything you can out of every last point the Prince is just a better buy.
I think you have it wa(backwards r)u. We need our heroes to do smites, summons and marches and the IB offers none of these. Additionally, he doesn't offer anywhere near the value of a TP when it comes to killing stuff.
The only reason I would use him is to get two banners in an anvil unit of TG (or Skellies if you are running a TK instead of a TP). We have really, really good low cost banners in the TK army with BoUL, Mirage, Rakaph, Sacred Eye and BoHD all being useful.
(I did this to a unit of 25 Ironbreakers, for those who dont know what those are they are beast)
