Welcome to Librarium Online!
hi guys i'm new to warhammer and have just been playing with the skull pass set goblins with some friends lately but im thinking of starting a proper army.
i like the look and rule book of tomb kings and i plan on buying the battalion box of whatever army to start but i'm not to sure how useful the battalion box is for tomb kings?
i've added up the points of how i would use the box (making the horses into heavy horsemen and having standards, musicians, champs in every unit, 16 skeleton warriors, 16 archers) and i've got the box at 614pts.
if i were to start with that as a core to build on to a 1k pt army what would people suggest?
roughly i was looking at a tomb prince with great weapon and light armour for 106pts, a liche priest with collar of shapesh for 140pts, icon of rakaph for my archers to reform once in combat to 4 wide and gain rank bonus and also adding a screaming skull catapult for 90pts. that would push me up to 990pts if i've worked this all out correct (im new to making army lists!)
how does that sound? is 16 warriors and 16 archers too little? should i make all the skeleton warriors into sword/shield and make my chariots or horsemen into archers?
any advice on where to go from a battalion set would be much appreciated.
However with tomb prince you cant give skellies magic banners, and if you had a tomb king, icon of Rakaph is 40pts, they can only take 25pt banners.
And also you no longer get a rank bonus for 4 models wide, has to be 5 models wide now apparently.
Just some food for thought so you dont make a list and get it all wrong like i did =D
Hello, hello! I am a long way from Holy Lybaras, and my time in the service of Queen Khalida was long ago, but...
I would definitely suggest the Battalion Box set! The Skeletal Heavy Horse is questionable, but you still would get 2 boxes of warriors and the chariots (105 dollar value) for $90.
If it were me, I would go eventually for at least one block of skeletons at least 40 strong. Outnumber your opponent with your fear causing troops, and prosper
You need ranks 5 models wide to get rank bonuses, the skeleton box art is a bit outdated I'm afraid.
Tomb Kings really come into their own at higher point values. Probably you will need at least another couple of boxes of warriors, to make your main fighting hand weapon and shield unit, and some satellite archer units. The archers are cool! My 40 block was all archers, and I did all right, but you pour an awful lot of magic into replenishing your casualties because they have no armor saves...
Anyway, whatever you choose, may Queen Khalida smile on thee, bless thee, and grant you immortality!
The Battalion is well worth it, although as suggested already, I'd make the horses up as light horse, not heavies. Our heavies are really not good at, well, anything.
When I was aiming for 1k, I added the two pack of Liche Priests, a King/Prince on Foot, a SSC and a Tomb Scorpion. You can get to 1k easily, and you will want to have both priests in your list. We live and die in the magic phase (I'm only paperhammering at the moment, but it's obvious once you start playing).
I'd make all your skeletons into bows at this point, they are not that much less effective than HW/LA/S skellies, and if you are playing defensively, you'll need the extra arrows.
Also, the standard loadout for most people in a small game is the Collar of Shapesh on your prince, and the Cloak of Dunes on Heirophant. Your Heirophant should never be exposed to enemy attack, so it should never need the Collar. The cloak will help you keep it out of trouble.
What dragon said is true teh CoD will save your hiero so make sure you have a LP on foot model so you CAN ACTUALLY use it lol
overall i think that TK always need to be fast so id buy more Chariots and horsemen
and to dragon, The SHH arent worthless... if you can flank with them and add a Banner of war for a +1 CR they will break most units and then have a 3D6 roll to pursue so they will run them down
AVE SATANAS! TK 3k army (W/D/L)(2/1/0)
First off, welcome to Khemri! Secondly, the boxed set for TK is quite nice - it has a large sampling of units allowing you to make a varied list. This in turn lets you figure out what style is best for you. If you want a close combat army you can focus on more so on chariots and a shambling horde of skeletons and enchanted constructs - like bone statues or massive, burrowing scorpions. If you decide to be more withdrawn, your skeletons can opt for bows and fire from afar. Tomb King never suffer from shooting penalties, or gain shooting benefits EVER so that is important to note. You can get skull chucking catapults or a casket of you want to be further back.
The only certain advice I can give you is stay far, far away from skelton horseman. Its a decent consensus that they are awful, and they in fact caused the recession. They are just that bad.
As to your list, I would suggest on either making bowman static, or just taking regular sword and board skellies. If bowman get into combat something has gone drastically wrong, and there is a solid chance they won' survive. In comparison, in combat a regular skelly gets a 4+ save so there is a much greater chance of breaking your opponent.
Other than that mix and match until your hearts content, then try for a solid 1k list. If it helps at all, always buy skeletons - no matter what you can always use more skeletons
0/0/0 Dark Eldar 0/0/0 Skaven0/0/0 Chaos Dwarfs
Starting on January 1st 2010
All I can say is:
DO NOT buy more horsemen
DO NOT make spear skellies
DO NOT buy a bone giant (unless you just want the model for show)
DO NOT buy an Icon bearer.
Also, here's my 1000 point list if you're curious as to what most TK armies should look like in small battles: (my tomb prince's/king's name is Afrikaisi in case you were wondering and yes it's a she but I use her as a tomb king in larger battles and as a prince in smaller battles)
Army of Afrikaisi (1000 Points)
Queen Afrikaisi (Tomb Prince): Great Weapon
1 Liche Priest (Heirophant): Cloak of the dunes
1 Liche Priest: Steed
20 Skellies: Bows, Musician
19 Skellies: Bows, Musician
1 Tomb Scorpion
1 Screaming Skull Catapult: Skulls of the Foe
This list was made after Phoenix showed me all the ropes for Tomb Kings so I bet if you ask Phoenix, he'd have a similar list
just a question on your list althealchemist it seems abit low on close combat units (i've only played afew small games with the skull pass armies and it seems i never get to just plant my archers/hand gunners and let them shoot the whole time).
How do your games usually go with that list? do you let your skeles get into cc once the enemy advances anyway? do the 2 blocks of archers take out much and does the ssc actually break much at range?
