Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've been putting this off for a while now as I have no idea how to proceed.
Any clues LOers?
Current painting project: 2300 pts of Dwarfs in 5 weeks.
I braced myself before painting my 3 swarms as well, seeing as how I was unsure how to execute a proper paint scheme.
I painted my entire swarm snakebite leather, then drybrushed the thing with bleached bone (that's my 'desert sand setup'), then I took a fine brush, a bucket of chaos black and started to pick out all the scarabs and bugs and beetles etc (which was quite a few, and the sum of them all was greather than I had first thought). After that, I made some simple highlights with regal blue on the black bugs, and then just a tiny bit of hawk turqouise on the regal blue. After that, it was a simple thing of painting the bits of bone emerging, and the snake, and the buried skeleton.
Granted, the tomb swarms, the casket of souls (the base) and the Ushabties was probably... okay, the Carrions too, all of them was quite the project to complete when one's used to just produce skeleton warriors left and right.
Banshee nailed the Bug Painting
But for the sand/base, I would highly suggest Khemri Brown (Foundation, or something) lightly mixed with water
