Firstly, sorry for making a new thread if you didn't think it was necessary, but I have several things I'd like to mention at once, so thanks for reading that
Ok, just to introduce myself, I'm Sam, from England and I've recently started getting interested in WFB again (I used to have a friend who I'd help paint his models when I was much younger) - and please bare in mind although I do have a rulebook it is sixth edition and my knowledge is very limited - and decided to go for the Tomb Kings army. There's just something about them haha!
Anyway, I'd like some of you to help me out a bit in getting started (I don't know if this should have been posted in the getting started thread?) But anyway... I need help to be pointed in the right direction, here's my situation.
Right now, I own 16 spear skeletons and in this unit is a Standard Bearer and a Champion (which after browsing the forums, didn't seem like a good idea) and a unit of 10 Skeleton bowmen, as well as the Liche Priest + Tomb King blisters which nearly everything I've mentioned is fully painted. Anyway, I'll shortly be buying the Batallion set and was wondering, what's the best way for me to go from here? Would it be to make a unit of 20 HW/S skeletons and add the remaining 10 into the bow unit and have 2 left over to replace the champion and standard bearer in the shield unit or what?
Also, I'm quite glad that when I recently bought the cavalry set, I set them up as light to put the mounted Liche Priest in.
Sorry for the long post which may indeed be in the wrong place, but I was feeling daunted that I may have started collecting in the worst possible way! Thankyou in advance and sorry for any obvious mistakes I have made
I forget how many skeles you get in the battalion (is it 36?) if so i'd add another 4 into your spear unit, even though spears aren't optimal unless you want to pull off the spear arms and swap them you may aswell get some use out of them, i'd then make another 30 archers and run 2x20. I'd then recomend picking up a scorpion and a screaming skull catapult then you'll have a decent force going of something similar to
priest on foot
priest on mount
20 skeles with spears
16 (i think?) light horsemen (maybe run 2 units of 5 if you need to bulk out points)
I'd also probably use my spear skeletons as counts as tomb guard models, should be fine as you'd have no other skeletons in your list holding shields and hand weapons, this would also give you a use for the champ and standard. You could push this to about 1500pts probably.
your going to get some people saying make shield skeles and some saying bows but it's all preference, i myself prefer bows as usually i find saves get negated or i don't make them anyway. The bows getting extra shots while advancing and being a bigger hassling unit is what i prefer, i run them 10x2 or wider if i have room to maximise my smiting and then reform them when the enemys close or i want to charge.

Thanks for the reply!
It's 32 in the Batallion, would it be worth having 20 spear skellies with Champ + SB and then 2 x 20 archers? I thought hand weapons were important but that's a nice idea
Also, should I put the Prince / King in the unit of spears?
And yeah I'd have a total of 16 cavalry but not all of my light ones are painted yet, only 4 so it could go either way
I was thinking maybe do 4 light cav + mounted hierophant then maybe having 8 Heavy cav for flanking or would it just be better using charriots / scorp?

Hiya Sam, welcome to LO.
Well I was about to post just about everything Outbreak already mentioned. All good advice there methinks.
If you haven't already seen the beginners guide Phoenix wrote I would strongly encourage you to take a gander (it's stickied at the top of the forum).
There are also some top notch TK battle reports done on youtube by VaulTK, they'll give you an idea of what to expect -and maybe help inspire you a little while you're busy painting.
Because Sun Tzu would play Tomb Kings...
Hand weapons are better but you can always just tell your opponent these guys have hand weapons not spears. Noone should mind as you don't have any other models to confuse them with. If you run the unit as tomb guard i'd put your king/prince in it but if their normal warriors i personally prefer my prince in a unit of archers at lower points games so that his smiting is more useful. I have a feeling some people wouldn't do that though but it's worked for me (adds punch to that archer unit too). I probably would never really field regular skeles with shields though hence why i'd declare them tomb guard.
I have never used heavy cav but they do seem abit useless (expensive skeles who move 8inches) If your making a guard for your priest you will still want 5 regular so you don't have to randomise shooting hits (units under 5 rank and files iirc randomise hits so your priest could get hit). I personally would prefer 2 untis of 5 light horsemen (if i had to push for points, usually 1 unit of 5 with a mounted priest as a guard is what i run) as they as cheap as and can hassle with shooting and redirect the enemy.

I have read it already, and am reading it again now haha, while revising my out of date rule book to get to grips a bit, I was just a bit concerned that I had started the army completely wrong when I read so many people demanding never to use Spear Skeletons Oh well haha.
And yeah, I think it's the same guy but I've seen VaulSC's video's to help me get to grips with the rules and playing style a bit better, I'm just hoping to get a relatively decent and usable ~1000 point list as cost efficiently as possible because I have a friend who started collecting Warriors of Chaos so it could be nice to practise battling him as soon as I can but with a usable army that can be continued to higher points.
Thanks again guys and I will probably do the 20 spear skellies + 2 x 20 bow skellies idea, but do you guys think it's worth having the Champ + SB in the spear skellies? If not I could convert them now and save hassle
Cheers again guys
Edit - Just saw your reply outbreak, and yeah good call on putting the prince in the archers. Thanks!
Would it be acceptable to put pictures of some of my models into this thread or would it be better suited in a painting topic? Thanks
Aww, its upsetting to see that nobody linked you to this yet...

Your post is in the right place, as youve clearly already decided on an army Good to have a new player on board!
Hehe thanks Pheonix, and don't worry... I've already read it I just started collecting with no idea what I was doing and as I said, was basically worried that I would have to start over haha!
Anyway I'll be doing the 20 X spear and 2 X 20 bow idea, thanks and it's nice to see an internet forum which doesn't just flame newbies. Cheers!
SammmUK, I welcome you to LO! Nice to have a new player around in the TK Forums.
I would suggest that you focus BOWS, and only bows You will most probably blame yourself for putting Spears on them when you have played for a while (as I do, blaming and punishing myself ). If you're unsure what to equip them with, just go for HWs
You've been granted nice feedback on this thread, hehe...
