Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have a tournament coming soon, and I'm currently planning my list. I'm new with TK, and not old in Fantasy. My idea was to use Ogres as a complement to my TK list. Here's a link to my current list :
http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...st-try-tk.html (2000 pts firendly tourney army, first try with TK !)
Ogres have the following advantages over Ushabtis :
- Cheaper for same attack, str, T and AS.
- Faster (march and +1 movement)
- Banner (combined with warbanner, results in a +2 static)
- Bull Charge
- Uses a Rare slot instead of special (in my case, I use no casket and don't plan on using SSC based on my list style)
- I know it sounds weird, but they can flee...
Ushabtis have the following advantages over Ogres :
- More resilient, through magic
- Could be as fast/faster, through magic
- Better WS, and faster in CC due to str 6 not being based on GW.
- Immune to psychology
What I find interesting here, is that Ogres are overall better IF magic is not spent on Ushabtis. So, what do you think ? Of the Iron guts ?
I also squeezed a unit of Leadbelchers in my list. I am simply in love with the unit, and I think they do add some versatility in an army that could use way more of it. What do you think?
It's kind of a toss up. Honestly for me I would never use a rare spot for anything but an SSC or a casket. No casket would just mean another SSC.
That said both Ushabti's and ogres have the same major drawback, that they are weak against static combat resolution. Ushabti will crumble and the ogres will flee. The thing with Ushabti is that they can potentially hang around longer as they don't break and they can be healed by a lich priest.
So for me the extra cost offsets the fact that they never run and can be restored to full strength.
Tomb Scorpion Kill Counter: Gotrek Gurnisson, Empire Cannon Crew=3, Blood Knights=2, Saurus Cavalry=5, Saurus Warriors=3, Razordons=3, Skink warriors=7, Jezzails=8, Poison Wind Globadiers=10, Warp Lightning Cannon=1
I would totally agree to Wafflebob in this case
Rare Choices are limited, so we shouldn't use them for other things than the TK Elite. If they would have used up a Special choice instead, it could have been more useful... But then again, I must point at the Special Curse of TK: You have 4 Special Choices and 4 Units to choose between - everyone with its tactical benefits.
As a foot note, I wouldn't field Ogres in my TK Army due to the Fluffy situation. Neither Tomb King Akhemnut nor Liche High Priest Alach'Karror would accept such a barbaric race in Nehekhara

WiP TK Army!
As much as i like Ogres, i agree with the bove generally. But then again if you dont want to use the usual rares, then why not go with some big hulking ogres? The only major (dis)advantage(?) is that they can be panicked. Assuming hey dont flee, they should benefit you greatly
I also agree with the other guys.
Aside from the problems associated with Ogres generally, the SSC/casket are nigh on mandatory these days if you are looking to build an effective list.
Having said that, we play the game for fun so if you're just looking to have a bit of a laugh then I'd say go for it. Personally I'd love to use goblin fanatics in a list just for the giggles.
Because Sun Tzu would play Tomb Kings...
If i didn't have the models for an ssc or casket i'd consider throwing a unit in, but if i had the models no way i'd not take them.
What you might consider since you weighed and balanced the ogre option as I have before, it comes down to the fact you can keep the ushabti alive with magic.
But, if you want something more effective then ushabti then consider this...
Regiment of Renown
Points: Golgfag and three ogres, including Skaff the Standard Bearer and a horn blower, cost a total of 285 points. this is the minimum unit size you can hire. The size of the regiment may be increased at a cost of 45 points per additional ogre.

M:6 WS:3 BS:2 S:4 T:4 W:3 I:2 A:4 LD:8
M:6 WS:3 BS:2 S:4 T:4 W:3 I:2 A:3 LD:8
unit size: 4+
equipment: two hand weapons and heavy armor
Fear causing unit.
I like this unit when i have the points to spare and will take it over putting a bone giant and a unit of ushabti in my army. the extra hand weapon means that with just the 4 base unit size with or without a charge i get 19 attacks. that is an amazing amount from just 4 models. Expensive, yes. Effective, Hell yes. not to mention unlike ushabti, they come with thier own command. so that helps alot with combat rez.
Other dogs of war / regiment of renown units that i would supplement would be:
Lumpin Croop's Fighting Cocks: (yes that is the units name ) skirmishin archers with good ballistic skill that would cost you 1:1 for a unit of 20 as per a unit of 20 archers.
Riccos Republican Guard: Heavy Armor + Pikes. i loooove pikes. (there are other Regiment of Renown Pike units that are cheaper to field with varying abilities that i could explain...
You know what... im just gonna make a thread about useful Regiments of Renown for tomb kings... But i still suggest the Golgfags to you
