This thread I am making to show opinions and effective tactics on the use of Regiments of Renown, Dogs Of War, Ogre Kingdoms, and a few stipulative scenario units/characters from here or there.
Some of my armies I have fielded I decided I was not going to use a skellie tarpit, or a casket ssc backfield... So I searched for alternate options. Despite my love of Bone Giants i wasnt planning on fielding two of them, and my OCD for using using all my non core unit slots up brought me to Allies.
One of my personal favorite options is the Truthsayer or Dark Emissary. They are hero + rare choices for 265 points a piece with the statline and wizard levels of lord choice caster from other armies. Having two dice in our power dice pool that we never can use, picking one of these guys to field in the army gives us access to them. For instance...
Dark Emissary comes with 4 power dice of his own, and gets 4 spells from his own little spellbook, theres 2 in our pool otherwise. so even if he only casts two of his spells with 3 of the d6 each, his magic power is equivalant to a High Liche Priest. I'm sure most of you know what i mean here.
But even so, picking up one of these characters is a good option, they still need a unit to put them in as they can not join a tomb kings unit. There are 3 units from the Regiments of Renown that I use in general as the hideaway for them.
Ricco's Republican Guard
Leopold's Leopard Company
The Alcatani Fellowship
these are all pike units with varying skills and costs. The main benefit of these gentlemen is that even though they are Regiments of Renown... In a normal Dogs of War army they are a core choice, but when they are hired otherwise they are only Special choices! so they dont even soak up our precious rare slot to hide the nifty caster we brought to play!
I will now elaborate more on the 3 pike units differences.
First up: Ricco's Republican Guard which i lovingly call Ricco's Roughnecks HOOAH!
M:4 WS:5 BS:5 S:4 T:4 W:2 I:5 A:3 LD:8
M:4 WS:4 BS:3 S:3 T:3 W:1 I:3 A:1 LD:7
Unit size: 10+ min unit cost: 180pts +12 for each additional pikemen.
Equipment: Pike and Heavy Armour, Riccos is equipped with two hand weapons and heavy armour.
Second: Leopolds Leopard Company which i refer to as the almost undead pikemen...
M:4 WS:5 BS:5 S:4 T:4 W:2 I:5 A:3 LD:8
M:4 WS:3 BS:3 S:3 T:3 W:1 I:3 A:1 LD:7
Unit size: 10+ min unit cost: 210 pts +12 for each additional pikemen
equipment: pike and light armour, leopold is equipped with hand weapon, pistol, and heavy armour.
what makes these guys nifty... Immune to Psychology!
Lastly: The Alcatani Fellowship or as I call them... poor mans pikes.
M:4 WS:4 BS:4 S:4 T:3 W:2 I:4 A:2 LD:8
M:4 WS:2 BS:2 S:3 T:3 W:1 I:3 A:1 LD:7
Unit Size: 10+ min units cost: 125 +9 for each additional pikemen
equipment: Pike and light armour. Roderigo is equipped with two hand weapons and heavy armour.
and all three have a standard bearer (non-magical) and musician!
Those are the guys I run around with my truthsayer or dark emissary...
BUT there is another unit that could be just as good for you guys who love skirmishers and dont mind spendind another rare slot...
Lumpin Croop's Fighting Cocks
Unit Size: 6-20
Lumpin Croop and five halflings including Ned (properly Neddy) Hamfist the Standard Bearer and a Horn Blower cost a total of 90 points. they may increased in unit size for +7 points a halfling.
M:4 WS:3 BS:5 S:3 T:3 W:2 I:6 A:2 LD:9
M:4 WS:2 BS:5 S:2 T:2 W:1 I:5 A:1 LD:8
M:4 WS:2 BS:4 S:2 T:2 W:1 I:5 A:2 LD:8
Equipment: Hand weapon and bow. Lumpin Croop is equipped with hand weapon, bow, shield and light armour.
Special Rules: Skirmishers!
so for 188 points you have a group of 20 skirmishing archers running around harrassing flanks and shielding your caster from shooting.
All in all, we must look at some of the pros / cons of hiring allies into our lists.
Pros I have noticed:
Flee tactics-it is nice to be ableto set a trap against a charging unit with fleeing ones so the unit is hellbait for a charge.
Marching- It's nice to get out into the field with out having to use magic to move again.
Magic Phase- can be buffered and more powerful with the D.E. / T.S. as well as dispel. not to mention they do have some intimidating spells.
Combat Resolution- If you got a undead unit and a DoW unit fighting something and they lose, your DoW unit can escape with a flee, while the TK unit holds em down. I hate bing stuck in my own tarpit don't you?
Cons I've noticed:
Characters: TK heros cant join DoW units and DoW heros cant join TK units. It can be troublesome the first couple times fielding them but it is a easily handled weakness.
Psychology: Fear, terror, panic... these can sometimes be more trouble then they are worth, but sometimes so is Immunity!
Models: I've found the best way to show the models something out of an Empire or Ogre Kingdom battalion, or even a small box set of another unit type from any army. there are many units in the Regiments of Renown alone that allow the use of every armies individual models here or there. personal favorite here being the Tichi Huichis Raiders.. Skinks on Cold Ones! come on ... thats just fun. or Long Drongs Slayer Pirates... Dwarfs in pirate garb and barrels of guns!
sometimes its just fun to put the regiment together as much as use it for the supplement.
But this is yet, Just my opinion and should be taken as thus. But i'd still love to hear your opinions and uses of Dogs of War, Regiments of Renown, Ogre Kingdoms, and the Albion Scenario.
Well, I liked your idea Got a question though: When you use one of your Rare Slots for the Dark Emissary, do you field a SSC or a Casket?

WiP TK Army!
the last time i fielded an emmisary, i brought a Casket. it seemed to work out fairly well. lots of pressure during the magic phase, which, i made the emissary go first to make them want to hold onto dispel dice forthe casket... or id cast after with the emissary an use the spell it has that works much like the casket hiting every unit on the board. so it was an AOE double threat. but you can still only do so much with 3 steggys barrelling towards you lol.
I plan on playing a couple games this weekend without any TK rare choices. just the Croop, Riccos and a Truthsayer.
