This is the start of a new series, that will hopefully bring new ideas and tactics to the forums. Each week, a new topic will be posted up about a different unit in the army book. This gives you your chance to discuss the unit to its fullest. So, please leave your comment!
This week's topic is - Bone Giant
How useful is he? Why would you take him over the other rare units? What's the best use for him?
I love the idea, how he looks, what he can do, but he just doesn't cut it.
I've used him a few times, and its always his poor WS. My attacks fluff (1-3 hit) usually what hits, should wound, but I usually get a few 1's in there. Unstoppable assualt will usually get me the same or weaker result, as ill probably miss with most of my attacks.
He is 220 points? So very expensive for what he does.
The only good thing, is people like to focus on him rather then my squisher units.
The main problem is that the Giant has to compete with Catapults, and a Casket.
Which In my mind are superior rare choices. They have almost always performed better then my Bone Giant has.
and they are both cheaper (esp the Catapults)
I agree with gdsora.
His poor poor weapon skill makes him bad. The reason other living giants work is because there stubbon at LD 10 so even if they do very few wounds they are good at holding things up. As the bone giant crumbles this makes his worse specialy for the increased point cost. I know the fact he is ment to have armour helps him live but as he can't take that against crumbling it doesn't really work. Also 2 catapults > Bone giant for the same points. I wish bone giants were good
Because i like the idea and the model tho i still have 2
Im also going to convert Sehenesmet cos his idea is awsome
I have not yet used one (first game with tomb kings this weekend! ) but compared to monsters of other armies with similiar points costs he is rather bad. I think with better WS he might be worth the points, then atleast if hes hitting on 3s he might do some damage.
I also think to compare his points cost to catapults is a little unfair as the catapults are in both my fellow gamer's and my own eyes too cheap and i suspect a point increase come next book, though we sorely need them.
On the more positive side of things he's great vs steam tanks (assuming you can get him there).
Yeah spot on above, I have two and I've used them tons they just don't ever do anything useful but draw fire. The only problem is when the fire finds them they die and your out 220 points and your rare slot. That being said, if you get super lucky they can wipe out just about any unit (my record is 15 Chosen) but still...
Two upgraded SSC's or a bone giant? Who wants 4 stone thrower shots a turn where you get to measure the first one so the other 3 are dead on?
