So I'm having a game a week saturday and wanted to get some advice. My opponent is playing skaven, with 1 or no wizards and lots of plague monks and a unit of censor bearers.
I'm not really too sure how to fight this, most of his army is immune to panic and fear atleast until it reaches combat so I can't shoot him to death. Also, I don't think I can assasinate his general or other characters because they hide inside the unit (some skaven rule im not too clear on).
One thing I'm also unsure of is if I can autobreak his unit, for example, I charge a unit of monks, win combat, is he still immune to fear for his break test? If he is then I really dont see this going my way as his army seems ideal for massacering low toughness units and monks being toughness 4 is going to make most of my units very weak against his.
48 or so skellies, can be used with bows, hw/s/la or as tomb guard.
1 prince, 2 liches.
8 light horsemen
Wanted to know what to use and how to go a bout fighting him because I can't seem to come up with any ideas that can beat his frenzied army of tougness 4, 3 attacks each killing machines :p
That is the answer here. Playing under 2000points i recomend 2 units of bowmen 20-25 strong with banners and champions. Not forgetting you can also fire these guys in the magic phase, thats a potential 100 shots a turn, always hitting on 5+. you will turn those Censers into pin cushions if he leaves them in line of sight. let him put them in cover if he wants, your still hitting him on 5s. Sure your wounding on 5s, but its going to hurt him. Not sure how Storm banner effects this as we always hit on 5s but storm banner reduces BS i think...which shouldnt effect hitting on 5s. ?duno someone else may be able to help better here.
Then just before combat rank them back up to block formatoin from line to get 3 ranks standard, and if shooting has paid off outnumber.
If he looses combat, he looses frenzy and thus i no longer immune to psychology of any kind (unless he has some kind of item/trick im not aware of as i havnt had time to fully scan the skaven book yet).
Yes he can "lead from the rear" of his unit and they still benifit his unit with LD and abilities if i remember right but i dont know how effective dropping his general will be in all honsety.
I find Light horsemen to be ...dire at best. Fast cavalry good, beig undead and not being able to flee bad. Even if you end up proxying the models i would swap there points worth for some tomb swarms. theses guys will be great for blocking charges and pestering the skaven blocks from behind etc like the scorpion, of which i find works amazing in 2s.
Big skaven blocks = Screaming Skull Catapult. he may be immune to psycholoy while frenzied but with a direct hit your looking at dropping 8 a turn at least, not counting if you shoot it off in the magic pahse.
Put TP in a chariot, give him icon t make him unit strenght 5 and chariot of fire to increase impact hits to d6+1. He can either hunt down the censers hopping to kill some before actual combat or take the entire flank of a unit by himself negating there ranks. in combat give him flail for strength 6 in the first round of combat.
keep your preists mobile, one with hieretic jar and cloack of dunes to fly about and get off that urgant spell, and the other if you can on a steed with staff of ravening, a bound item which does 3d6 stength 2 hits. only wounds him on most things on 6s but against his censers and units it can make an impact or force him to save/ use his dispel dice to stop it.
chariots take a unit of 4 and just sit the TP in them at a strategic point. i would sit at the back and wait for him to come to you. i think each chariot has 2 bows so why not pot shot things if you get board. then move forward, and either roll up the flank of his army as he goes to meet the center of your army which is the skeleton bowmen blocks or combine attack singl units with the scorpion (and tomb swarms if you use them) to totaly destroy them.
If your playing less than 1500 go for units of 20 skeletons same set up.
Hope this helps a little.
i believe it will be 1500 points and yes that helps alot. I must admit i had thrown the idea of shooting away because i cant cause panic but i guess reducing numbers is a good tactic too. I dont think dispel dice will be a problem, he rarely takes magic to games.
I was hoping killing his general would reduce his leadership but i suppose it wont help really with frenzy. the only way ill break them reliably is with fear.
With regards to the frezny, what i was curious about is the wording on it. Does the effect get lost INSTANTLY or at the end of the combat phase? if its at the end he would have it for his break test yes?
sounds crazy buuuuut..... casket? look at their leadership, and if he doesn't have dispell dice, he's gonna eat it. I'd go magic, shooty heavy, you can heal, he can't. Prince in chariot is always good, but play defensively, he'll have to come to you and your casket, and you'll be shooting him all the way. Banner of undying and staff of ravening, bound spells to confuse him even more about his dispell dice, as well as putting the banner in a huge block as a tar pit to hold for your prince to smash. Shooting will beat them, Skaven relies on outnumbering, they have cheap units to swarm, but like stated before, you can shoot twice and eat them down, and by the time they get to you, they'll have weak numbers. Good luck and tell us how it goes.
Casket or SSC (depends on your play-style)/Bowmen 20-25x2/Carrions 5/Tomb Guards 19-24/Scorp/Tomb Swarm/Liche Priest x2/Prince
As a sample list
Well, game is tommorow ive decided on this
listprince in chariot of fire with icon of rulership
liche with hieretic jar and cloakliche on casket with collar of shapesh (bowmen unit nearby to absorb any potential wounds)
20 skeletons with HW/S/LA with standard+musician
16 skeletons with bows nekkid
4 ushabti (i just cant bear to not use them, i want to get good with them cos i love them. Heart > head :p)
3 chariots with banner of cursing word and standard bearer(cursing is an experiment plus it curses people, very fluffy )
rare = casket
Plan is to let him come to me, get him in combat with block of skellies (once softened by bows and casket hopefuly) then crush his units with my prince, chariots and ushabti. I have 3 flanking units so if i dont flank him im doing something horribly wrong. Not sure what to use the scorp for yet but i reckon i can find a use for him (adding combat res most likely). Will report how it went
I'm sure you'll do great, and learn alot! Wish you the best against Skaven...!
Don't forget to tell us how it went! pictures would be nice XD.
