Welcome to Librarium Online!
I am looking to get into the game and one of the ideas I had was to paint all my Skeleton Archers up to look like the Burning Dead Archers from the Diablo video games. However, I have never painted a minature before and would like to hear what some of you think would work best. Doing some research I am thinking the following:
Prime: Skull White
Wash: Baal Red *Baal duh!
Dry B: Red Gore
Let me know what you think!!! Thanks!!
Painting fire normally goes from dark red through orange to very light yellow almost white on the edges, some people paint it the other way around. Take a look at minis on games workshops site. A good one to look at would be the balrog from the LOTR range.
A simple and more realistic fire for a beginner (or inexperienced painter) can be acheived by four easy steps;
(starting from a white base coat)
1. Paint it yellow, let it dry
2. Give it a heavy 50/50 mix of baal red/gryphonne sepia inkwash, let it dry
3. "Drybrush" it a 50/50 (or 1:1) mix of golden yellow and skull white white
4. Now give it a pure baal red glaze (a glaze is very watered down ink).
Job done. It won't be spectacular, but it'll do the job. If you like you can do more coats of inks, or highlight right up to pure skull white on the very edges...it depends how "hot" you want the fire/flames.
Generally though you want a yellowy/orangey overall colour to fire and flames, not red.
I am not familiar with Diablo, so I hope this is relevant and helpful anyway.
The Burning Dead Archers from Diablo arnt really on fire. They are just a reddish skeleton in Act II. I tried posting a link in an earlier reply but apparently it was blocked. If you need a reference please google Burning Dead Archers. Thanks for your reply!!!!
Ah I see. Ignore me then. LOL.
Only one way to really find out to be honest and I have no skeletons to spare to try it.
Fantasy: Wood Elves, Dark Elves, Beastmen and Tomb Kings.
LotR: Misty Mountains and Rohan
I ordered some skeles on Ebay so I will try what I posted originally and get back with yall. I'm pretty excited about painting up some Burning Dead Archers!!!! lol
I'm actually really interested to see how this turns out, if you can, please post some pics (good or bad!) of the results.
There will DEFINATELY be pics!!! It may be a while though because I still havnt received them from Ebay and I will have to paint them up But when I have results I will let you guys know!!
As promised!!! My first Burning Dead Archer!!!! This is just the Baal Red wash, will be following up with a Red Gore dry brush this weekend. More pics to come!!!

Looks pretty good so far, though the light you photographed it under makes it hard to discern the model's real colour. I'd say wash it a couple more times; when I was "staining" some of my models by using Baal Red over Mithril Silver, I found it took about 3-4 heavy washes to get it to the Red colour. Currently they look slightly too pink, I think. Good work, and keep it up!
