Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi all - Just got back from the club after a 2500 point match vs High Elves - Including Teclis and the banner of the world dragon... My thats a nasty combination!
Anyway - I thought I would let you all know how it got on, and some little tips and tricks i Learnt along the way.
My list: King - Chariot, Glitering Scaled, Death Mask, Sword of striking, Shield
High liche priest - Level 4, 4+ ward
Liche priest - level 2 death mage, Khanopi
Nekaph, Settras herald, on a chariot
4 Chariots, Full command, Movement banner
30 Archers, Full command (Heirophant bunker)
20 Archers, Full Command (Death mage bunker)
4 Ushabti with Bows
Casket of souls
His list (Roughly)
BSB with banner of the world dragon and halberd
level 2 mage (Life)
10 archers (Life mage bunker)
50 Seaguard, Full command (Teclis bunker)
20 Swormasters, Full command
2 bolt throwers
My army is based around letting the enemy get to me, and counter charging with the warsphinx and chariots. His army was a stand back and shoot the hell out of the enemy, so one of us had to make the move, or it would have become a very boring game.
Unfortunately Teclis made things very hard, and I could not use my death magic to kill him or the BSB, so combat was my best choice. and standing in a unit of seaguard made that unappealing.
1st turn - dissapointing shooting from the elves, only causing one wound on a chariot. everything else was out of range, very little movement apart from the knights to get within charge range of a lone catapult i had placed as bait. Magic was lacklustre, as the only spell he got off was the pendulum (Teclis took Shadow), which rolled short of my units.
My turn 1 - move the chariots up, and the death mage with his archer bunker. Took a pot shot with the magic at the BSB - and then got told of that damn banner. Chucked a catapult on its head, which missed and scattered onto his other mage (Life level 2) killed a nice chunk of his bunker, but failed to panic them off. What was good was the shooting from my Ushabti - enough to kill 2 knights and make them panic them away from my catapult, almost off the board!
Casket was dispelled, But the boost from that and the heirotitan made his life very uncomfortable. he burnt both his dispel scrolls on my first turn!
Turn two. the knights rallied, and redied to charge again. his lone chariot moved forwards, but i scared it away with the Warsphinx. 40 seaguard shots plus 2 bolt throwers wiped my chariot unit down to just the king, once withering had been cast on them, and he then boosted the unit i could charge with stoneblood and thorns... not the best chance for him to live.
My turn two. The scorpion came up, misfired and killed itself. I failed the charge with my lone lord, and forgot i had a terror causing mask! Doh! moved the units up, and shot the knights again with the ushabti - panic again and off the board they went! the catapults got some good hits on the seaguard, but that bsb saved them from a failed panic test. I decided to try my purple sun at the elves, but even with irrisistable force it just rolled lazily towards the enemy. and the damn thing got about 12 inches. leaving it 3 inches from his forces. The khanopi ws cast, but with all his dispel dice that was stopped. No combat, but my warsphinx was close enough to charge next turn.
Turn 3: Hoping to save Teclis, he stayed where he was with his units, and got off the miasma spell on my shpinx, hopping to stop the charge. He irrisitable forced it with a double 6, and i thought YAY - he can get sucked into the warp... Then I was told he ignores the first IF... DAMN YOU TECLIS! Anyway. he used the shadow atribute to swap him for his other mage, behind the seaguard, so i could not charge him. the tried to pit of shades the sphinx jsut in case. that i dispelled.
More shooting, and he killed my general sat on his own now, and the proceded to wipe out half my death mages bunker, hoping to charge it next turn. Still no combat, and onto my turn 3:
I attempted a charge against his bolt thrower, instead of the seaguard. I though that if i won that, i could get a flank chage in, or foce him to reform. But as luck would have it, his bolt thrower failed it's terror test and ran off the field. a quick redirect into the seaguard was tried, but although i could, i failed the charge, rolling two 2's and a 1.
That was alright, because I then proceded to shoot both catapults at that unit. Both misfired, and the rest of my shooting was awful. The magic was great. I took all 6 of my dice, and cast Caress right at teclis. As a Direct damage spell, i did not need to see him. With my level, d3 from the heirotitan and the roll, no IF, but a respectable 21. Teclis rolled to dispel - 18. And his heart was ripped from his chest with 5 wounds. The 1 dice i got back from the lore enabled me to cast smiting on the death mage bunker, brining it back a little. I did not mind if he died, his job was done!
Turn 4: The elf player, in sneaky undehanded skaven tactics, ran his archers that had been a Teclis bunker forward, to redirect my Sphinx. I would have no choice but to charge those two models... delaying me from combat with the seaguard and unable to overrun into them. without teclis his magic was next to nothing, both being buffs and his main combat unit having the world dragon banner.
Shooting for him involved trying to wound my sphinx and heirotitan, but their high Toughness deflected all his shots. and still no combat!
My turn 4: so that charge into the 2 archers infront of my sphinx was successful, and i also charged the titan in as well, for fun. Smiting went off with the AoE vesion, enableing me to pepper the seaguard unit with shots, and reducing them by 8 models. Now they were down to just 24, a resonable number to kill with the shpinx i thought. the combat was quick. no wounds on me, and a swift 2 killing blows with the Tomb guard on the back of the Sphinx (8 attacks total - Yay) wiped them out. a combat reform allowed me to line up for another try at charging the seaguard. Nothing would stop me now!
Turn 5: He bought his swordmasters round to counter charge my sphinx, and buffed it with the spells he had. the shooting caused a wound on the sphinx, but nothing else could save him now!
My turn 5: The Sphinx got the charge off, and slammed into the Seaguard. My magic got me the smiting spell off on just the sphinx - also getting that 1 wound back- , and the casket finally got to work, killing off a bolt thrower and half a unit of archers sat next to it! Combat was great. With 12 attacks at me he succeded to wound me 3 times, and i failed 2 of the saves. his bsb got a wound in as well, and then it was my turn. with the tomb guard, normal attacks and thinderstomp i killed another 14 dead i though i could win it. but he was still steadfast with 2 ranks and the bsb passed his ld roll!
And then Time was called on our game... Final score - 1066 points to me - 1185 to him. Just a loss. But close, and very fun to play.
Tips and tricks i have learnt:
The chariots are an all or nothin unit. I have to either commit them, or keep them back. 1/2 way acress the field, away from healing, and combat, does them no good whatsoever.
The Heirotitan and Casket are and auto 1+ for me now. If they go for the titan, the are not going for the sphinx, or the rest of my army!
Caskets dont need line of sight. I put my casket behind a building, so that he could no see it. As it is a Direct damage spell, i just need to point it in the general direction. and if it cannot be seen, it cannot be shot at! Even cannons cannot fire through buildings!
Bow Ushabti are worth it. At the very least, they are great deterants from warmachine hunters. and the bows give them something to do while waiting for the enemy to come to you. I know people say why pay 150 poins for a babysitter, but today and before they have been great against big gribblies and high armour targets.
Skeleton archers do not need to be bigger that 30 models. Anymore and they become to big to move when you need them to.
Skulls of the foe - No worth it at all. either he failed his test, or he had the bsb close enough. 30 points for it is to much.
EBTS. Not sure on this, but i think the scorpion will be dropped from the list. for that price i could get a BSB, which would enable me to re-roll failed ld tests (Like those once you heiophant is dead)
Anyway - I also Tweeted this battle, and got some great support from some of the FB tweeters, including Bad Dice, and Heelenhammer. I plan to tweet most of my games now, as it allows me to go back and see what i could change. And photos help jog the memory!
Just a few tweeks to the list and I shall report back next week!
definitely drop the scorpion, but a BSB is not worth it. You should be rolling those crumble tests against LD9+ anyway! Spend those points on gear for characters, command for units, or more models for units.

So they do not! You would thinks that something with legs that big could move fast! Ah well - I will chalk it up to another thing to learn!
I already have a herald, so I may drop him from th SC character to a bsb to get max combat res for the chariots...
