Welcome to Librarium Online!
Before I start, I want to mention that i dont play Tomb kings. My main armies atm are empire, brits and just started vamps. But I was hoping to get some advise how to deal with sphinxes in general. We have plenty of newbees in our store who bought 4, 5, or 6 of them and just field them away every single game.
I dont know about everyone else, but I consider this very annoying and so does 99.9% of the players in my store. All of a sudden every tomb king player has access to T8 monstosities that can single handedly wipe out just about any other unit. The rest of the army doesnt even have to be strapped up. Cores can be bare minimal considering the cheap costs of the skeletons, but with 5 spinxes on the table its awfully hard not win every game you play.
So my question is what is the best way to deal with them? How do you find large numbers of sphinxes, be it khemri or necro. It appears that even a dragon doesnt stand much chance when it comes to going toe to toe with a necrospinx... I am asking specficaly from the brit and vamp standpoint, with empire I just try to load up on cannons and heavy artillery.
Knowing something of Vampire Counts I can say this:
Try to hold up the necrosphinxes with units of Zombies...with 5 attacks it will take the better part of 2 turns for it to chew through a decent raised horde so you can hit it with Blood Knights or something else hard and nasty. If you use Lore of Shadows or Death then Purple Sun, Pendulum and Pit off Shades and Mindrazor will be a great help.
Basically, try to tie down the Necropshinxes with massed infantry and the warsphinxes with monsters and the likes, I know it's rudimentary but it's anything short of spamming PoS or cannons...

With brits it will be trebuchet, and heroic killing blow on a peg lord. Massed archer fire will work too. For vampires, go shadow lore. Withering, miasma, and pit is shades will take down them quick. Also, ghouls will be your friend. T8 means nothing against poison, and if you can get a horde in, 12 poison hits equates to 2 wounds. Add in rank bonus and you are 5 points up on it for crumble. Or you could hit it with a varghoul. Breath is only for 1 turn, after attacks. Can't stomp or crush.
I generally get beaten by things I cannot stomp, as a warsphinx has not got a lot of attacks after that. Necrosphinx has a low initiative, so pit / sun it.
T8 means that if you are hitting on 4's, you need around 12ish attacks in order to put a wound on it. Sphinx are very good against anything with low attacks. The strength doesn't doesn't matter too much because they need 6's to wound anyway.
As such, you need a unit with a crap ton of attacks. In general, Things like ogres, trolls and minotaurs come to mind. For VC, I see ghouls working well because of their poison. As for Brets, all I can really thing of is a treb or the HKB Peg Knight or massed bowmen.
Also, Shadow and death magic work well. Mindrazor something to S8 or 10 and you'll be fine.
"My Word is Iron"
"Show me your Friends, and I'll show you your Future"
The problem with mindrazor is with VC's low LD. A banshee with a wraith unit would be great. so would spirit hosts. Etherial units will be the perfect roadblock against sphinxs as the have no combat res of their own. And a banshee howl can strip them of some wounds when you get close.
Wind of undeath would be a great spell against them, as it does not rely on toughness, and gets you some hosts for free.
