Welcome to Librarium Online!
played 2 games this week .. 1 game vs Dark elves.. and str 3 archers were able to kill my sphinx with tough 8 on Stand and shoot's .. i call BS .. then game two my casket of souls died to somthing that did x hits at Str 2 just because of his 6 rolls...
i wouldnt mind if they had made it like the shooting to hit was , where if they rolled a 6.. they had to rollt those again for 5 or 6's again .. but when its to the point that i dont want to take my 200+ big into a unit of 80 pts archers because i never get there without a big loss .. its just kinda bla .
Well, to be fair Repeater crossbowmen can pump out a hell of a lot of shots...
Think about this though, if 6s didn't auto wound then GW would have made our sphinxes toughness 6 or 7 instead so that str 4 infantry could actually hurt them. In which case against other monsters/higher strength infantry we would be at a great disadvantage.
Bad luck will see the downfall of your sphinxes mainly because often the only way for infantry to take them down is through good luck (especially Warsphinxes).
The casket was a bit more unfortunate though (I imagine it was an Ogre Bonecracker or something like that), I've found the best way of dealing with them is Incantation of Protection...although even that's certainly not foolproof.
"Take their gold, burn their homes, kill their familes and enslave their souls. Show them no mercy...oh and could you post these letters while you're out?"

Actually I am ok with this. The fact that anyone can wound the Sphinx means I have to think about what I deploy them against. I know that it is best served against high strength opponents - elites and great weapon armed units. and dont forget that your casket is a Direct damage spell. No line of sight required. so place it behind a building, forest, other large model, so they just cannot see you. And you can heal it with the lore attribute.
Yes i have said and agree'ed with you both at the start.. but after a few games in a row of it happening . im finding out the the " bad luck " just isnt bad luck but will happen to often since everyones running bigger blocks .. and rolling more dice .. i just wish after testing it was roll a 6.. then reroll 6's to get 5 and 6s.. and after talking it over with my group we think were going to do that for our games. so there is still that " chance " but not as often .. and they cant just say oh tought 6+ thing.. ill go at it with my 80 pt unit and if i get lucky and kill it cool.. if not ,oh well no loss.
I think the 6's always wounds is needed with toughness 7+ monsters starting to appear. You have to remember that the average str of a warrior is 3, 4 at best, so anything that is T7 or more would be pretty much immune to all attacks unless you go up against Great weapon troopers. Putting the 6's auto wounds has let GW include more nasties in it's game, with increased stats, without those big nasties breaking the game and making normal infantry completely redundant.
If you had such a creature that was immune to str3/4 attacks can you imagine it's cost in points? You could double it's basic points cost and then add some. Think anyone would take it then? No chance.
Plus, doesn't that Toughness 8 bad boy have a 2+ save anyway? What are the chances of a str3 attack actually wounding it? you'd need to roll 6 wounds to do one wound through the armour. Needing 6's to wound you'd need 36 hits to do 6 wounds. Now say you were up against, say wood elf archers who hit on 4's at long range you'd need 72 shots to do that. How many points is 72 Wood Elf archers? 720pts?? More? That's to do ONE wound....
On a side note. I'd be more annoyed about a creature made out of stone being auto wounded by poison....
unless im playing it wrong .. it has a 5+ armor save .. whichstr 4 stuff makes it a 6 .. and a lot of things give it neg 1 armor anyway.. so a 6+ or no save at all.Plus, doesn't that Toughness 8 bad boy have a 2+ save anyway? ~Shrug~ that ball bounces both ways...hydras an such are equally vulnerable to 6s... I do want to see one change, though. If you need a 6 to wound, armor saves are unmodified, regardless of your strength (armor piercing would still inflict the normal -1 penalty). The idea that S5 would eliminate the 5+ save of a T8 model is insane. OTOH, if your strength is close enough to the target's toughness to wound on 5s, okay, I can see you cutting through armor, too...

ya i guess.. but Usually you have to do something to get a unit to have poison and you can stay away from them.. Hardly any standard core 80 pt per unit model has poison... but you cant stay away from there whole army .. because everything can wound you on a 6 or at least give it a 2+ save.. thats a good ideaOn a side note. I'd be more annoyed about a creature made out of stone being auto wounded by poison....
Big, high toughness monsters don't break 40k purely because there is a lot of high strength weapons out there. Basic infantry are packing 1, if not 2 or 3, str7+ weapons. This makes people use their big gribbles wisely. Using cover, sending in support. If you were able to throw a monster at an army knowing that pretty much everything in the enemy army couldn't scratch it it kinda removes the need for tactics.
You dont get weapon upgrades like that in Fantasy. There would not be enough models in an army that would be able to handle a Toughness 8 creature in combat. Why do you think Monsters were limited to Toughness 6 in all the editions before this one?
If you discussed this with your mates and they don't like the rules either. Come up with some house rules.
