Hi, I am new to this website and to TK's (and Warhammer!) in general.
I have picked up the current army book and planned a 2000pt army. Then I saw an opinion on here by somehow saying never ever take spear 'skellies'. This really threw me as I thought that would be best but I don't know so thought I would ask you experts.
A couple of questions:
Firstly, I really like Skeleton archers and would want either two sets of 16/20 or one set of 16/20 and 3 Ushabti's with great bows.
Is this a good idea?
Secondly, what is the sensible starting amount of points that I should be writing an army list on? Is 1000pts ideal so I can get to grips with them or is it better to go to 1500pts?
Finally, with your recommendation of the best starting amount, how many Lords/Heroes/Specials/Rares am I allowed and how many Core choices do I have to take?
Thanks in advance
Also, to your point about the spearmen skellies, there is a difference of opinion in terms of which wargear option is ideal. I personally use a squad of 50 standard skellies with hand weapon/shield and another smaller squad (35) of skellies with spears. The larger horde I either use 10x5 in a horde formation or 5x10 to maximize my ranks and form a larger tarpit. The spearmen I keep in a 7x5 unit to maximize their attacks.
Either way, you're goal is to try to minimize your losses through combat resolution. With sword'n'board you're hoping that the parry saves will save a couple skellies from death and limit combat res through losing fewer models. With spears, you're trying to maximize your attacks and hopefully cause a few more wounds by fighting in that extra rank, hence limiting combat res through causing more wounds. Either way, I think the skellies are fairly cost effective with either load-out.
Im a fan of sword and board as opposed to spears for a few reasons. One, skellies to me are tarpitters which do better with a defensive bonus as opposed to an offensive one.
Spears do provide more attacks which can help you on combat resolution, but thats only while you have at least 3 ranks. Once you start eating away at that third rank, the points you paid for the spears on ALL your skellies is wasted. Shields will benefit you all the way down to the last skeleton.
Also, you do get an armor bonus from ranged damage when you pay for the shield. You could pay for the shield and a spear, but that is really a LOT of points for not very much hehe.
All swords all the time for me... But I advise others to take one unit of spears... As a liche bunker for your hiero. They get a 6++ from the hiero, which adequately replaces the lost parry save. In the meantime, LoN spells are easilly cast from behind your battle line, so there's no reason not to hide where the enemy can't get at you. Bows, which I use for my lich bunker, require LOS to use, meaning that the enemy can get at you... But I'm too lazy to convert my archers!
