Im starting a tome king army(after feeling that with a 10-0 record w/ proxy empire,it just wasnt fun). I have feelings both way on the skeletons. On the one hand, your skeletons can move and fire, and actually, they can march and fire, since the spell of urgency is done after the movement phase, and doesnt count as marching. They would be great at hitting skirmishers, and single models,as they always hit on 5+. However lets face it. If 10 skeletons are firing(i cant imagine a unit more than 10 models wide) about 3-4 will hit, even with the special bows. They only have S3,and 24" range. Thats not too good. Also, once their within range, they shouldnt be moving, making the 5+ not AS good, still good though. And considering the rest of your amy should be getting into melee, that doesnt leave them much to do. With spears, sheilds, and light armour, they cost 2 points more. For that, you increase your save from none to a 5+(4+ w/ handweapon in combat). You also get spears. Along with fear, this makes them decent in H2H. It gives the army the numbers they need in combat to break enemy units. So im asking any vetern khemri player out there to tell me which is better.
note: i really dont wanna play a defensive army,so keep in mind if i took the archers i would still be taking the fight to the enemy.
Well with your skeletons your going to be trying to get in to close combat on the flank for an aut-break by fear. Also having that good save in combat and causing is great for average foot troops.
Where as, as you said bows always hitting on ** is good. But considering how much damage they do for thier strength and hitting on a ** is not that good to begin with.
As you said you will take the combat anyway I would have to recommend the spears and shields and light armour for a vicious player like yourself.
In the end there is only war.
i prefer the bows to support my fast caverly army
i like to move close and then fire at any scare units that may threten my flanks
Don't ditch the sword & shield skeleton either, better sav means less loss, less loss means more chance of winning the combat result from rank and such, with the low fighting skills of skeletons, even having the second rank attacks often means no wound made against tought or well armored units.
On a side note, archer can be made quite a bit more effective if combined with the poisonous skills of Queen Khalida, auto wound on 6 when shooting means half of your shot that hit will auto wound, it's not negligible.
yes, I don't go for spears much. Although the extra few attacks are useful, I don't normally intend for my skellies to kill much stuff, normally, they are just there to back up numbers, because really, it should NEVER be only your skellies in a combat, normally I go for a combined skeleton and tomb guard charge, but sometimes I can get my bone giant there instead.
What might be quite good would be giving a large unit of archers the icon of rakaph, which seems a little broken tho, cos it says it can only be given to tomb guard and skeleton warriors, but costs 40 pts, and skeleton warriors cant have banners more than 25 <_<
