Book Army Specific Army Lists: Cheese or Done thing?

Right, Hopefully people from other armies will join in here but with no General 40k room, I thought I’d post it on home soil.

This topic has recently been raging on the Tyranid Boards:

How many people actually have a separate list depending on wat army u are going to be facing? Be it against the Mighty Marines, the weak but well armed IG or Tau or the CC specialise Tyranid or Orks. Do u always take the same army?

See, I play a different army list if I'm against a marine army with their higher toughness and gayer armour saves (more genenstealers) than I would if I was against a weaker, more numerous, more blasty Imperial guard army (more homagaunts) But I have been slatted and called ‘Cheesy’ or a ‘Power Gamer’ but I always thought it was the ‘Done Thing’ if I go into a battle I'm expecting to come across more Flames than if I was a marine army and more of those damn Rendering Assault Cannons.

What are other people’s views on this? Do u tailor ur army? Or go tournament style?

Also, can u post wat army u play (if ur not tyranid) cos I have a hypothesis that some armies need to be more customised than others. Eg. There is always going to be something a Lascannon is going to be need to take down and a Heavy Bolter is going to kill any armies troop no matter who u are.

Anyway, Cheers for any replies…

I tool up most of my list because I win more often and I dont play in a lot of tournies. Got like 8 lists for various armies. It works much better than an overall balanced army.
BTW I play tyranids and I hate wraithlords.

Good idea! We really need a general 40k room.

I play tyranids, and since I haven't really played nids for that long, I usually make a list right before the game. I am still figuring out strategy, and all of that good stuff, so I don't have any pre-made lists.

I would think its a little cheesy, because no other army can be as specialised against a certain army than tyranids can, but that what makes tyranids good, being very specialised(and the mass numbers of course).

Nobody has really said anything yet about always having a different list, but of course I only usually play against 3 or 4 armies.

Marines can be just as specialized and I.G. almost as much.

All of my armies are tooled for fighting 3+ saves.
Why?
Because to date, I've fought exactly one army that wasn't Chaos, Marine or Necron-it was an Armored Company. So, anything else I make puts me at a serious disadvantage.

I have loads of army lists, this is after all what nids do. What the point of useing a IG list against SM you would get you ass handed to you. I played the Necron last night and i use some of the same list i would use against the SM but only becouse of the 3+ save. The people i play also change there list if they lose to me so its a case of knowing the other team, not everyone has every codex so the only way you pick up stuff is on the battle field and if pos next time you add to your list to counter it !

While I don't specificly tailor my list against a specific opponent, I use units that are designed for the job instead.

I perfer to take the middle path (or half and half, whichever you prefer)

FIRSTLY, I Make my list prior to seeing the other person's army. I Have set point lists that i modify slightly based on the race. I NEVER change my list after Seeing his army makeup.

My troop base is always Stealers, regardless if I'm facing swarm or Power Armored snacks. Fits in with the fluff of my army and I've seen too many gaunt armies.

My HQs will always stay the same (Winged Tyannt and BL with retinue)

Elites, Fast and Heavies is what gets swapped around, depending on the army i'm facing. All my fexes are magnetic as to maximize the weapon output.

IMO, this isn't cheesy in any way. If you know your opponent's army well enough to try to compose a list to exploit his weaknesses, I say go for it. Anyone can do this and those that don't either have very well balanced lists or are too proud/ignorant to face facts, All's fair in war (or war games), take whatever advantages you get and run with them.
