This dude is a lvl 4 caster and generates 6 power dice on his own. He is immune to killing blow and poision. He has a 5+ armor save and a 4+ ward save. He carries a bound item that does 2d6 Str 5 hits and expires on a roll of 1.
- Vamp Lord, lvl 3 magic, black arts, dark acolyte, Cadaverous Cuirass, Crown of the Damned, Hand of Dust, 435 points
He is a lvl 3 magic user, generating 3 dice on his own. He has a 2+ armor save and str 6 attacks.
- Vampire, lvl 2 magic, dark acolyte, flayed hauberk, sword of might, 220 pts
That's it for characters. These guys have 11 power dice between them, including the army pool.
- Skeletons x 25, full command, banner of the dead legion, count as being twice their unit strength, 245 pts
- Skeletons x 30, full command, banner of endless nightmare, count ranks to +4 instead of +3, 285 pts
- Zombies x 40, mus, standard, 172
- Corpse Cart
- Dire Wolves x 5 x 2
- Fell Bats x 4
- Spirit Hosts x 3
- Black Knights x 6, full command, banner of the barrows, 229
- 4 Blood Knights, no upgrades, 12 attacks from the knights, 8 str 4 attacks from the mount, total of 20 attacks at str 4+
11 power dice, two bound spells, 6 dispel dice, corpse cart will reduce casting of enemy wizards
126 models, if I counted correctly
The main thing i have a bit of an issue with is the Black Knights. On average the BannerotB will get you one extra kill. As does the War Banner. Why not take that and save points? (assuming its still cheaper, i dont have the new book yet).
The 4 KotBK. for over 200 points, for four models with an average (for Heavy cav.) save these are a bit fragile, unless you plan on using most of your dice healing them?
Otherwise, nice list! Necrarch im guessing?
Looks nasty. I know if I was playing against you, I'd be praying for you to miscast and send your guy into the warp. And yet, it seems small to me unit wise. Most of the old VC lists I played seemed to have more units of skellies and a big unit of zombies and lots of ghouls too. Maybe having those big point-heavy cav units is the difference. I have a feeling your Blood knights will get all the shooting poured into them and the black knights will be the ones that actually kill more things.
I'd give him the staff with +1 on casting\dispelling and 3+ ward against ranged.
My Vampiric Powers of choice for a caster lord would be master of black arts, dark acolyte and one of the powers that allow him to summon skellies, ghouls etc etc. You get +1 from the staff and +1 from the power, which means you'll cast Nehek's on a 2+....up to 8 times. I'd go with ghouls.
If you use plenty of ghouls, a single Vampire with Ghoulkin will be a bad surprise for shooty armies. I'd keep him cheap, maybe adding Avatar of Death and a couple of dispell scrolls or bound items.
I'd try to get a 3rd character, maybe a lvl2 caster vampire, with some bound item and Vampiric powers as you wish. Three characters should be around 850 pts, which is not terrible after all.
Free march move + higher toughness + poisoned attacks make me prefer ghouls over skellies, I'd play 3 units, one for each character. I'd also play a small zombie unit, just 20 of them. It's sooo easy to summon them during the first couple of turns!
Banner of barrows...I'm not sure about the correct trasnlation, but if it was the 5+ ward in the old book, that banner doesn't exist anymore Now there's a 4+ ward save banner, but black knights can't take it due to it's cost. I used to play 9 BKs + Count with 5+ ward, but now they have ethereal movement, which means you can easily hide them behind forests and other things and still be able to charge. Moreover you can summon them, a well kitted Lord will raise a Knight on a 3+ as many times as he wishes, so as long as there's still 1 alive , it's bad news for the opponent. I'd play 6 knights + 6 knights with no command.
If you switch the skellies for 50 ghouls approx (14+14+14 to hide your characters) and drop 20 zombies, you'll save enough points to add a 3rd character, and there would be some more points to spend (maybe additional fell bats for warmachines ownage).
This is how I'd play a magic heavy army with the new book ^__^
40k : Necron ,Chaos, Space Orks ,Eldar ,Dark Angels, 'Nyds
WHFB : Orks & Gobbos, Vampire Counts

Erg, the regular vamp can't be level 3. Level 2 max, so he might get the +2 power dice.
Yeah, if the blood knights draw a lot of shooting, the black knights will do some hurting. The four knights are cheap enough to not bother me too much.
I just don't want the black coach sucking away power dice. The varghulf is a cool concept, but not that great in gaming terms, except as a flank supporter and lending the vampire rule to other fast units.
The wraiths are so expensive to get enough to claim a flank or rear bonus.
Thanks for the comments. Lots of fun ideas to kick around with the new book. Thank god for that, I was so bored with the old book.
