Here's my Zombie Dragon list, that I wrote up for fun at first, but ow seriously considering it. Here goes:
L+H - Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon - 705
Level 3 wizard
Powers: Red Fury, Infinite Hatred
Items: Walach's Bloody Hauberk, Sword of Might, Wristbands of Black Gold, Talisman of Lynci (purely because i had 10 spare points...and at least if the Dragon dies, he can still run around...)
H - Vampire - 185
Level 2 wizard (Dark acolate)
Powers: Dark acolate, Lord of the Dead
Items: Flayed Hauberk, Black periapt,
H - Necromancer
Book of Arkhan
C - 20x Skeletons
FC, Banner of Hellfire
C - 20x Zombies
C - 14x Ghouls
C - 5x Dire wolves
C - 5x Dire wolves
C - Corpse cart
S - 4x Fell bats
S - 6x Black Knights
Standard, Banner of Strigos
R - Vargulf
TOTAL - 2000
PD - 8-9 (periapt), 2x bounds
DD - 6-7 (periapt), 1x Balefire
Basicly, I can see this army spliting up into 2 parts. The slower infantry form one, backed up by the Vamp, necro and corpse cart, and then the faster things like, Vargi, Knights, and Dragon form the other. I can try and catch the enemy in a sort of pincer moverment, with such big flankers, adn solid, raisable core.
I think for a vamp on dragon that doesn't have a dreadlance:
Flayed hauberk, crown of the damned and sword of battle.
Rember to be careful when using a zombie unit, if it gets envolved with another of you're units in combat, then zombies are so easy to kill the combat res kills the other unit. So not always a good idea to use zombies as a tarpit and then flank with another unit. Depending on how you're gonna use them 10 ghouls might be better. Holding a table quater fine and covering flank.
Remember book of arkhan isn't a short distance spell, if you're using on you're vampire lord on dragon it might not be a in range. Also be careful not to rely on the book of arkan to much, if its a situation where if its dispelled it will ruin your plan.
As mentionede, Flayed in on my other Vampire, it's cheap enoug for him to have that and the Black Periapt. I'm not risking the Crown on a Dragon Lord either. If it was a caster hidden in a unit, then yes, I use the Crown, but with a Dragon potentially in the open, he can't afford a single turn just standing around, and not casting IoN on his wounded Dragon....
Anyway, cheers for the advice. Zombies are extremely easy to kill now, you're right. Using them as a tarpit would only work against units with 1 attacks, just have to be careful.
Ok let us know how he does. My vampire lords have generally done fine, even fantastic apart from one time where the vampire got split up from the rest his unit and had no ward save, a very lucky wood elf got killing blow. And another time where i took the armour that gives you +1 toughness, lowers weapon skill etc, i basically should have taken a hauberk instead, it got him killed.
Any reason you don't use the Balefire Spike instead of the Sword of Might?
I was actually worried about taking the Balefire spike and running into an enemy that is immune to fire based attacks - then remembered they come with a hand weapon as well. Question though - do they have to tell you they are immune to fire weapons before you attack or just laugh at you when you tell them how many -4 saves they have to take?
If you have the balefire spike, you must use it. In the magical weapons description section of the main rulebook, it states that if you have a magical weapon, you *must* use it over a mundane weapon.
As to the question itself, if it's from a magical source, they don't have to tell you until it comes into play. And it's also up to you to know that things like the Dragon Prince armor ignores flaming attacks even though it's mundane. The high elf player isn't obligated to tell you when you are about to hit them with a fireball that they're immune. If he's really nice he might take pity on you, but that's about it.
