Well, I've finally decided to make a list using the new army after being on the receiving end of a rather significant massacre from VC. Still slowly working to get my army updated, but here goes.
Vampire lord, general, dark acolyte, master of the black arts, summon ghouls, flayed hauberk, book of arkhan, blood drinker
Vampire, dark acolyte, avatar of death (great weapon)
Necromancer, 2 spells, scroll (didn't know what else I might give him...)
20 ghouls, ghast
20 ghouls, ghast
20 skeletons, full command (worth giving them a magic banner? Maybe..)
Corpse cart, balefire
21 grave guard, full command, great weapons, royal standard of strigos (statistically, in the first round it is better than banner of the barrows and cheaper so I chose it instead. Considering jumping them to 24 models 6x4 rather than 7x3 for the extra rank)
I have 26 points left, no idea what to do with them. I would have liked to include a unit of spirit hosts, but ran out of points when I realised I had forgotten the corpse cart at the end. I could add another scroll, boost the grave guard, or maybe try to shave points and add an extra necromancer... Thoughts?
It looks very solid (and compact!), but I would try to get 14 points extra somewhere, to at least get 1 minimum unit of wolves. You are kind of lacking in the light support department IMO. Granted, there are no really easy points in your army, but getting the infantry across the field and into combat might prove difficult against someone with diverting/marchblocking units.
I like the list, looks solid with enough PD and vamps. My suggestions...
Since your lord generates 5 pd and has +1 to raise ghouls make your ghoul units into 2x 15, this will save you 80pts and your lord wont have problems making them into 20 (considering he will cast 5 IoN's on them).
Corpse cart...change balefire to the other upgrade (sorry dont remember the name)which gives +1 to raise, more usefull for 1 cart and for your ghoul raiser.
Ok so far the extra pts are 106, take out 2 grave guard and 1 skellie...since the vamps will join them (i guess), so we r left with 138.
Take a second scroll on the hero vamp, make him a BsB and if u want give him the ring that rebound a wound, maybe also give your necro a power stone.
Take a unit of 3 bats for war machine hunting...@60pts.
Now for the rare part...dont really like the coach in this edition, cant brake ranks etc...i think a second varghulf would be better. With the spare pts u could give a war banner to your skellies.
So to summirize my huge post (sry mate;?)....
2x 15 ghouls
19 skellies with war banner
Hero vamp, bsb, scroll, the ring...i still cant remember the name
corse ,the raise upgrade
3 fell bats
Like said ealier, drop a few models in the units, size 20 if no hero 19 if he is. But I'd just drop the black coach and get some fell bats or dire wolves. Another Vargulf would be cool i guess, but i think you need some more stuff to take out warmachines. I usually just use a unit of 5 fell bats and a varghulf, its all need (though my army is more offensive). If i was using a infantry army again i'd probably have my grave guard with great weapons and try to fit in a drakenhoff banner or i'd have 4 vampires.
Drop black coach take small black knight unit with full comm, Drop half the ghouls and Skeletons (Keep the 3 units just make them smaller) and take another vampire wiith lord of dead and one with summon ghouls keep using 1 dice and get those units upto at least what there at now. People won't dispel it as they will save here dice for ur other spells (Curse of years, gaze of nag and van hels) if they do try n stop em thats fine as u can get ur game winning van hels off easier. Works every time and u get a free choppy character in there. Also drop a spell of the necro all he needs is van hels. Don't take spirit hosts wraiths are 100 times better.
Hmm it does lack fast support, and hunters, but I figured I wouldn't need it with the amount of invocation. I don't think wolves are worth it anymore since they don't get the +1 strength on the charge. I was considering giving the vamp M9 so he could hunt.
Was definitely thinking about dropping the ghoul units and just riasing them in the first turn. Could do if I find I need points. But really I don't want the list to be too overpowered. I was also thinking about 'upgrading' the Varghulf to a giant with my spare points, giants are tougher and can potentially inflict more damage plus the models are awesome, I don't really like the Varghulf model.
As to the Black Coach.. No one likes it in the new rules? I was going to use it as support for my infantry blocks to add kills, and give the terror factor, my opponents are quite scared of it. It can be very nasty if it eats a few power dice too. But I guess 200 points for a few extra kills could go elsewhere.
Wraiths better than spirit hosts? I find that hard to swallow.
I know a guy who swears by the new black coach. I'll try it out a few games and see what I think--it's the US 4 that I don't think I'll like.
I like the new coach, and have used it in most of my battles. The 4+ ward is really handy, on more than one occasion I've used it against infantry alone. After impact hits and 5 S4 attacks you shouldn't lose by much, if at all as most infantry have trouble hurting the super-tough coach. Next turn you might lose by a few points, but with the 4+ ward the coach can actually pin units and wait for backup.
And if you manage to power it up to the flying, ethereal Super-Coach of Death it gets really funny! Only problem is it is most likely to happen towards the end of the game, and it's just so much fun to play with.
So to sum up: the coach is no longer as useful as a flanker, Varghulf does that better, but in support of your infantry it is great. Still has the S7-problem though, but the ward has made that less of a problem as well. Not something to count on, but handy none the less.
I thought the Varghulf was US4 as well? How is he any better at flanking than the coach?
Now that I've thought about it better, the coach sounds all shiny and good with its evocation of death, and it would be hard to kill... But its not really going to inflict a huge amount of kills. A Varghulf would probably be better value. Oh well, I'll try the coach in a few games anyway and see how it goes.
