After getting advice here and seeing some games played, I'm back with list #2.
I'm not crazy about having only a 2+ armor save on the lord, but after playing VC for so long in 6th ed, the book of arkhan seems like a must. And the helm of commandment seems to do really well in games I've played against VC or just watched.
One vamp per skeleton unit. BSB with grave guard. Or add lord to GG to really go strong there and give him regen, but I've never been a fan of too many eggs in a basket.
But the GG are the beef unit. With ASF and great weapons, along with helm of commandment (another reason to put the lord elsewhere), makes them very, very deadly. Plus, they're regenerating wounds, and combat res wounds. And they can be healed. All but impossible to deal with.
- Vamp lord, dispel scroll, book of arkhan, helm of commandment, master of the black arts, dread knight, lord of the dead
- Vampire, flayed hauberk, dispel scroll, dark acolyte, lord of the dead
- Wight King BSB barded mount, drakenhoff banner
- Skeletons x 20, full command, banner of the dead legion
- Skeletons x 20, full command, war banner
- Zombies x 22
- Corpse Cart
- Dire Wolves x 5
- Dire Wolves x 5
- Grave Guard x 23, full command, banner of the barrows, great weapons
- Fell Bats x 3
- Spirit Hosts x 4 (I've got some awesome models for this unit...ought to be very cool)
It's a pretty good list - A little lacking in speed, but stout in terms of survivability with large blocks to start. Personally, though, I'm a bigger fan of Dark Acolyte on the vamp lord over Master of the Black Arts. Consider for 20 points cheaper, you get an extra spell (assuming no forbidden lore taken), 1 power die, and 1 dispel die vs. just 2 power dice. With those points, you could perhaps take Summon Creatures of the Night - remember that Fell Bats are classified as Infantry for IoN purposes.
Another thing to consider in terms of placement, I frequently put my Drakenhoff BSB with my vamp lord in a basic unit of skeletons. Makes the skeletons hard to get combat res against, while the characters can do some damage (moreso the vamp than bsb, but he can get an occassional K... it also provides extra defense on the vamp lord. The grave guard with great weapons honestly don't need a character to win combat, especially if you have the helm of commandment on the general in a different unit... and going 6 wide for an extra attack is helpful, too. 2's to hit and 2's to wound most things with a potentially striking first GG unit is ugly enough on its own :p
Lastly, any upgrade on the corpse cart, or is it bare? I love balefire - especially if you can double up on it. It can really mess with an opponent's magic phase if they're at -2 to cast, since most everyone plans oh so carefully on how to use their power dice to max effect.
Yes, thanks. I forgot. The balefire is on the corpse cart.
I like your reasoning with dark acolyte. I'll play around with that.
I'm hoping that summoning can make up for the limited number of fast units. I don't expect the wolves to last too long, but now that IoN can be used on them, they're a little better there, unless they're wiped out in one turn.
Fell bats are classed Infantry? Is it because of their US? I would've thought flyers don't get that.
Okay, here's what I did...
Vamp lord, dispel scroll, book of arkhan, helm of commandment, dark acolyte, dread knight, lord of the dead, walking dead
Just by making your change and dropping one zombie. I love walking dead and wanted it. I think I may keep this for now.
The back of the book reference page has things broken out by sections: Characters, Infantry, Cavalry, Monsters, Chariots, and Mounts... Fell Bats are listed under the Infantry section. Nor are they Ethereal, so by that I'd believe they get the full benefits of IoN.
And Walking Death is definitely a good choice. GL - let us know how it plays!
I like this list, i'd go for crown of the damned though, the times the ward save could have saved me when i was instead using book of arkhan which was easily dispelled. 2 more fell bats would be cool.
Ooh, let me know if you find some nice fellbat models I've been looking for some
I'm using converted Daemonettes with Fury wings as Fell Bats... the Brides of the Vampire... and still tourny legal, when I put them on the bigger base.
