Hey all, ==Me== here. I've been wracking ==My== brain over the next army I do. I know I want it cheap and tourney ready, but I have yet to make a decision. So I looked over the VC army and looked for ways to make a cheaper army. Here's what I came up with.
Vampire Lord-level 3, Flying Horror, Master of the Black Arts, Avatar of Death, Helm of Commandment, Wristbands of Black Gold, Black Periapt
Vampire-Lord of the Dead, Dark Acolyte, Cadaverous Cuirass, Gem of Blood
Wight King-BSB, Drakenhof Banner
Necromancer-Invocation, Raise Dead, Sceptre de Noirot, riding Corpse Cart
Skeletons-20, full command, Banner of the Endless Nightmare
Skeletons-20, full command, Banner of the Dead Legion
Corpse Cart-unholy lodestone
Grave Guard-19, great weapons, full command, Banner of the Barrows
Models-85 plus zombies
You can see this coming a mile away, but I revel at the idea of ASF Grave Guard hitting on a 2+ with Regen. The flighty Lord is going to be a caster extraordinairre, going where he needs to be to summon his undead minions. ==My== main concern is his protection in combat, but I figure with flight he should never get stuck in anyway.
The other Vampire goes with a unit of Skeletons and will keep raising them to make 2 good sized blocks of SCR. The King goes with the GG obviously and the Necro sits back in support, raising lots of zombies for the Lord to build up. I added the Varghulf because I felt the list lacked some punch and I just love the model.
This army comes from 2 Battalions, 2 Vampires, 2 boxes of GG (will convert the King from these) and a Varghulf for a grand total of $279. I'm not a huge fan of the cost, can anybody beat it?
Any comments on the list itself or suggestions for a cheaper set up would be greatly appreciated.
A few points, the ghouls will get torn apart, they are two small units.....make them one big one.....personally i dont like the idea of unholy loadstone....id rather two balefires...(-2 to anyone with in 24" of both (which isnt hard) yes please).....Necromancer....not sure about....if you drop the corpse cart and the necro riding it...you can get a basic caster vamp (level two with summon ghoul/ lord of the dead/ armour)....which can have the same spells as your necro and with more dice to use. If you are going to keep the ghoul units that low then get a vamp with summon ghouls (e.g. the one mentioned above)....I agree completely with the varghulf...(great stats and great model).....and in my personal opinion...in under 3000pts i dont like the idea of the drakenhof banner...its such a points sink....for example if you dont take it you can swap the wight king with a necromancer (plus the spare points you have anyway) and raise both ghoul units to twenty men/ghouls strong....a much better use of points IMO....you can always raise up the GG that die with your lord (and the necromancer you get from dropping the wight king)
Sorry about such a big block of text and dont feel oblidged to listen to any of it....but thats just my two pennies worth....good luck and happy gaming!
I mostly have the Ghouls there to guard flanks and because 2 Battalions gives ==Me== 20 of them. Do you think it would be better to run them as 1 unit of 20 or as the are now?
I've always marvelled at the ridiculousness of the GG Death star, so the draw is mostly to see if it's really as bad as they say. That and plastic GG are too awesome to ignore
Nothing is really set in stone, I'm just looking for a competitive army that's easy on the wallet.
I did some thinking and came up with this.
Using some Bretonnian models I can convert Black Knights and Skellies/Zombies to make a good themed list.
So with a Bretonnian Battalion, VC Battalion, 1 box of GG and 1 box of KotR I could make
Vampire Lord on Abyssal Terror (converting from a Pegasus, or would a Hellsteed be better?)
2 Vampires, 1 flying and fighty the other with the Skellies raising more
Wigh King on a skeletal steed
2x 20 Skellies
2x Black Knights (1 unit w/ Banner of Barrows and the Wight King, the other with Dead Legion)
This army is much faster, has the ridiculous Blood Knights, and has a Blood Dragon/Bretonnian them I like. Anybody have experience converting KotR and GG? Does it work?
1 box of grave guard and one of tomb kings horsemen works alot better as conversions IMO, but im biased because thats what i do
Im about to use left over skelly and GG bits on tomb king cavalry for my black knights. Not the best, but I figure people will know what a skeleton on a skeletal mount in a VC army is supposed to be.
I dont like the look of the skeletal horses...(btw yh i would have the ghouls as one unit of 20)...so im using pistoliers (*spelling*) and painting the horses ethereal....what do you think???
